I have been dying my hair blonde since I had it bleached around 3 years ago. My hair never seems to go the colour on the box, its damaged so I prefer to buy cheaper hair dyes rather than your like £7 ones.
I bought two boxes of Schwarzkopf Live Salon Style Hair Colour (in Ultra Light Blonde 9-1) because in Superdrug they were going at £2.99 around 3 months ago and it was a bargain to me as I know Schwarzkopf are a very good brand.

The hair dye:

It is very quick and easy to prepare the dye and then use it. You have to squeeze the one formula into the bigger bottle with the first formula in, and then shake it until the colour and the cream have mixed together. The colour can then be dispensed out of the nozzle and straight onto your hair. I would always recommend reading the instruction leaflet fully before use each time and to use gloves as the dye sure goes get messy as you need to massage it into your hair to make sure no bits are left un-dyed.
The gloves are a bit too big for my hands but they serve their purpose in protecting my hands from getting covered in dye.

As my blonde dye sinks into my hair and skin, it goes a purple shade which at first had me a tiny bit worried but this is normal; your hair will not actually come out purple. As it dries in the sink and on any material, it goes purple. It is easy to wash out of the sink and off the skin if wiped off when it has not fully dried. However in materials it is impossible to get out, I always wear an old t-shirt and use an old hair towel; which both have dark purple marks on from this dye.

The dye does smell awful. It is not the worst smelling dye I have used but it certainly is not the best, the fumes make me cough a bit as they are strong and our bathroom is tiny. I open the window fully to just let the air in. As I leave the bathroom to wait in my room for around 35 minutes before being able to wash the dye out, my sister will go in the bathroom and complain that it stinks of hair dye.

The length of time you have the hair dye on depends on the outcome you have in mind for your hair, like this dye is supposed to be good on the coverage of grey hairs. It is best to judge the length of time needed when reading the leaflet but I normally leave the dye on for 35 minutes as my roots are dark and my hair is damaged so it is a little more stubborn with dyes. The dye will dry the hair out a bit, it will take at least 2 washes before your hair will be going back to its normal soft state but as well, this also depends on the condition of your hair and what hair washes you use. I find I get the best result with colour when i apply the formula on dry hair that has not been washed for a day.

My hair will not take on the exact colour the box says but the dye certainly does change my dark brown roots into a light blonde colour. It also does not fade out like some cheaper hair dyes I have bought which faded in 2 weeks. I bought two boxes of this hair dye and waited 4 weeks from using the first box until I felt I had to use the second because my roots had come through enough.

The dye did help even out the blonde tones in my hair and I will be buying it again as when it is on offer, it is a very good buy.

The conditoner:

It smells lovely. I cannot explain the smell but it does help to die down the 'freshly dyed' smell you get coming from your hair. However it does not get rid of it fully and normally after the second or third wash does the dye smell normally fully go.
It is a pale yellow colour and is not too thick yet not too watery. It can easily be spread through the hair and shows its best results when you leave it in for at least 2 minutes as it deep conditions the hair which is what it really needs as dying hair drys hair out.
The conditioner sachet is thin, it does not take up much room but the downside is it is best opened with scissors. It has a line indicating where to cut across but I am always oblivious to the conditioner until I get into the shower and go to use it. I can never be bothered to get back out of the shower all cold and go on a hunt for some scissors around the house, so I have to attack the sachet to get it open. It would be easier if they made it a sort of easily tearable one or put it in a tiny thin tube with a lid.
There is enough conditioner for me to get two uses out of it. My hair is thin and is just past shoulder length.

The box:

Packaging does not really bother me when buying hair colour; all brands photoshop so I don't expect my hair to come out the same colour as the models. The box looks professional, it makes me believe it will be salon quality hair dye and that the brand is not gender specific, just because the model is a woman doesn't make me think only a female can use it because I have seen in their advertising and on bottles before that men have been featured with that hair colour. The box is thinner than a lot of other brands I have bought, It helps that the colour seal conditioner is in a packet rather than a tube which takes up less space and requires less packaging. I find this beneficial as sometimes when I go away and need to pack hair dye, I do prefer having a pack that is not heavy and does not take up much room.
