As with all broadcasting monopolies these days, there is always something that stands out in the crowd. It could be simply something unusual, or it could be much deeper, a mixture of fantasy and reality. The Sci-Fi channel holds to both areas in a big way, and is always entertaining.
Unlike normal TV channels, the Sci-Fi channel is heavily made up with docudrama and classic cult movies, but along with these you can also view some of the more amazing, and often unheard of things. One of my favourite programs is fortean TV, which is based on the monthly paper "fortean times". The whole show, and of course paper, is about things like ghosts, aliens, miracles and the strange inexplicable things that scientists can't make sense of.
It's really interesting to see how ghost hunters work, or as I did recently, watch top scientists delving into the myth or maybe even fact, of mermaids. Until I saw this particular edition I had always thought that mermaids we're just a myth, but now I'm not so sure. However, I'm not going to tell you what happened, apart from the fact that they had real fossilised and stuffed mermaids for autopsy purposes, and photographic material that links normal humans with birth defects to the theory.
If you're interested in this sort of thing, you'll have to get the channel for yourselves. As far as I am aware, it's only available on sky digital, and I think also on-digital. You'll have to check out the later.
Anyway, back to the channel. The films that are usually shown are often Japanese anime types, though you also get a good selection of classics like, Close Encounters, ET, Alien and a host of ghost story types. But it has never been limited to those types alone. The films are usually played a few times each per month, so missing them is not a problem, also they use a standard water shed to prevent the youngsters from seeing something they shouldn't.
Along with the films is the biggest selection of classic serials I have ever seen, or heard of. Prime time is loaded with stuff like "six million dollar man, bionic woman, wonder woman, time tunnel, and loads more. Also for the Buffy & Angel fans, it's endless. Overall the programming is really good, and even caters for younger viewers. For anyone with a taste for the not quite so normal, Sci-Fi channel is a must, it's also a part of the basic package with sky, so you don't have to be rich to watch it.
As a final point, the channel offers masses of educational programming with information to all the sources via the internet, and often hosts many competitions with great prizes, but as with the twilight zone, Seeing Is Believing!
Advantages: Excellent for sixties/seventies anoraks, some good sci fi specials Disadvantages: Too much "Bubble headed boobies!!!"
At first look the Sci-Fi channel UK seems to be a fans dream come true. 24 hour science fiction programming? Excellent!! Or is it??
If you like sixties and seventies sci-fi then it is perfect. If you prefer your sci-fi more upto date then stick to Sky 1.
I will admit that there are some good films and programs on, especially the occasional 'Making of..' documentary. A person can only take so much 'Lost in Space' or 'six million dollar man' etc. ... ...a program listing for the sci-fi channel USA. What a difference! Brand new programming, coming soon the new DUNE series! new series based on the Invisible Man (Reading the article it looks good!!) I suppose if we wait long enough we will get these and other new programmes. ...

Advantages: different stories Disadvantages: on very late
This series is on on a sunday night but they do show older ones and different series on terrestrial tv.
I have got hooked to this and watch them all they show a group who investigate unexplained happenings .Some are odd and are hoaxs which always leave me feeling flat.Dan Ackroyd hosts the programme and they are using data out of files that have happened.
The character Matt Praguer is always the unbeliever and in many cases he has been proven wrong ... ...I suppose. This week they were investigating a gate and it was full of energy a gateway no one knows what is on the other side. There resident Dr, Anton has seen his late wife and daughter inside and followed never to be seen so far again .Also one member Lyndsay has been giving info to the press as she is not happy how much gets covered up, a women we all agree with. Also this week everyone seemed to be leaving a cliff hanger at midnight that left ...

...so much. The sci-fi channel starts at 8.00am and continues until 4am. The whole channel is dedicated to sci-fi and horror. This channel shows at least two good horror films a day for example Friday the 13th, The dentist, and Progeny, obviously there are a lot more, but it would take forever to list them all. The channel also features many fiction and non-fiction programs. For example, the Six million-dollar man, The Incredible Bulk, Timecop, Swamp ... ...programs are Amazing Stories, Mysteries, Magic and Miracles, Sightings and Sci-Focus. This channel is included in sky family package which cost £13 a month, this is an excellent channel that no horror fan should be without. What more could you ask for, great films, fiction and non-fiction programs. ...

Advantages: An original premise. Disadvantages: Mixed quality of episodes.
It seems a lot of the TV series that were originally shown in the 1970's have all made a bit of a recent comeback, mainly on ITV4 who seem to have purchased the whole ITC back catalogue. Another shining example of a series that should have gone further was Space 1999. The future was always a bit of a grey area when it came to seventies sci-fi, you could work on the lunar surface and travel between the Earth and the Moon easily and yet seventies fashions hadn't actually gone out of style!! It was a shame that this program, which was a high budget Gerry Anderson Production never went on for a third series, if a third series was made it would have ironed out the majority of the issues from the series before that caused the cancellation of the program itself.
The premise of the story is good and an angle that hadn't been approached before ...

Without a doubt Babylon 5 is one of the best Scifi shows to hit our screens over the last few years. It beats all of the Star Trek attempts into a cocked hat. Basically B5 tells the 5 year story of a space station (Babylon 5 itself) and its involvement in a war between the Shadows ( an evil alien race) and the Vorlons (a not so evil race) that threatens the galaxy itself. While not the most original story, it is handled wonderfully with conversations in one episode having implications in another episode further down the story arc. It really is like War & Peace in space, it covers most conditions of the human condition such as love, hatred, honour , spiritually, death, and friendship. It was shot over 100 episodes and 3 feature length films (4 if you include the first episode). I really can't recommend this highly enough.
