All the Real Soldiers Are Dead

Advantages: Original, scathing and poignant
Disadvantages: Bleak

...you read any review of Slaughterhouse V on the web (and I suspect anywhere else…) you will see those words sprinkled all over them. So it goes. They are cleverly mimicking the great man himself you see. So it goes. Any bleak world view, any moment of agony would be met with the satirical (or perhaps just comic?) So it goes. So it goes. After a while I find that deeply irritating. So it goes. I know it's only a relatively little complaint but once ...
...it. So it goes. But hey, don't let that put you off. If you have ever wondered at the fractured nature of your life, seen a mythic journey reflected in your own, searched for meaning but been afraid to find it, well, you might just enjoy this unusual book. It is a true original which mixes all sorts of outrageous genres together, spoons them round the pot with liberal lashings of comedy and spiky satire and fundamentally deserves its place on ...

Darth Bane: Rule Of Two ... a dark and disturbing sequel !!!

Advantages: Great sequel, strong characters, gripping storyline !!!
Disadvantages: erm ... waiting for the third book in the trilogy !!!

...to many fans of the Star Wars movies]. Rain becomes Darth Zannah and together with her master [Darth Bane] they wage a war not only on the Jedi but also on the Sith ... Bane's paln is to create a myth surrounding his existence and create fear through deception and lies. However, a Jedi named Johun Othone beleives the Sith Order to be alive [despite the fact that it would appear that the entire Sith Army has been destroyed] and he pursues Bane, believing ...
...What follows is in intriguing tale ... and a fascinating insight into Sith lore. Highly recommended ... "When your power eclipses mine I will become expendable. This is the Rule of Two: one Master and one apprentice. When you are ready to claim the mantle of Dark Lord as your own, you must do so by eliminating me." ...

How Not To Be A Hero

Advantages: Induced childhood salivating at comic book heroes
Disadvantages: Potential of this book failed miserably to appear

Being a supervillain is sort of a life ambition for me. To be truthful, World Domination is what I'm actually after but, in the meantime, I'm going to have to put up with contemplating a world full of superheroes and super-badguys, with me lining myself up somewhere at the head of them all, ready to be the next Dr. No. A world where beautiful damsels in distress, like sallysmith1973, are rescued by fearlessly gorgeous wonder women like tallulahbang, ...
...headline names as MutleyTheFrog and Torr, accompanied by their pet android N13ROY and all managed by their beautiful and intelligent secretary, HotBabes. The heroes will be there, all looking to save the planet from supervillains like myself and Greenierexyboy and that villain voted most likely to destroy the planet than rule it, the digitalenvironmentalist. Yes, that's the sort of world I envisage. Superheroes everywhere, saving the world from ...

Sexy Robots

Advantages: fun
Disadvantages: only for fans

My first encounter with Charles Stross was through Halting State, a William Gibson-meets-Christopher Brookmyre near-future post-cyberpunk crime caper. "Saturn's Children" is a different species within broadly the same habitat, a not-so-near-future space-opera thriller, more of a Asimov-meets-Philip K Dick-with-a-sprinkling-of-Douglas Adams. My s-f reading is a bit haphazard, but this was the first vision of the post-human world in which not only ...
...patrol the borders in search of self-replicating pink goo (although Lem's Cyberiad is set in a robotic world, but a much more grotesque and surreal, an explicitly satirical one). Freya Nakamachi-47 is a robot in a Solar System full of robots. It's a post-human world, still running on approximately human-designed principles, especially socially, despite the extinction of the Creator race several hundreds of years ago. Freya's raison d'etre, though, ...

Closer to Heaven

Advantages: Great character building
Disadvantages: A little slow paced for my taste

Fantasy and science fiction are genres that mesh well together. Some authors have written successfully across both genres, but not usually in the same story. Jaine Fenn has managed to combine both in one book and it's an interesting read. One night, a stranger is found lying unconscious in a bog just outside the village of Dangwern. He appears to have come from nowhere and, apart from a strange piece of cloth lying near his naked body, there is nothing ...
...Unfortunately, this includes the stranger himself, as he is suffering from amnesia and has no idea even where he is, much less how he came to be there. Fortunately for Sais, as he is nicknamed, the boy who finds him is "sky touched". This means he is soon to travel to the City of Lights to be tested to see if he is worthy of being a consort of the goddesses. The village elders permit Sais and the boy's mother Kerin to accompany him to see if anyone ...
