Classic Stuff Advantages: Very readable, enthralling Disadvantages: Too heavy to read in the bath ...started reading adult science fiction, the Amber chronicles were an introduction to what serious fantasy writing should be. Some 20 odd years later I was pleased to see that the first ten books had been gathered together in one volume and bought it thinking I'd dip in and indulge in a bit of nostalgia. A week later my sleep deficit is way up but I've been thrilled by the richness and depth of imagination shown in this book. The writing style feels ... ...of twenty years or so. The book describes the machiavellian plots within an extraordinary family. As they fight each other for rule of the city of Amber they must also work together to prevent the destruction of their world by a dark force. It would have been easy for Zelazny to sink into the usual sword and sorcery cliches but instead he gives a more scientific slant to the powers used by our protagonists. ALIENS, MYSTERIES AND WEIRD PLANETS,,,EXCELLENT ! Advantages: A REAL PAGE TURNER Disadvantages: NOTHING THE DIG Apparently this book also has an old PC game along the same lines of the book. An asteroid comes in close vicinity to the Earth and a team is sent to check out and explore whilst they have a window of opportunity. However once on the asteroid things start to go awry. The team of three find advanced alien technology which when messed with transports them to an alien planet called Cocytus which is millions of light years away. They ... ...back to the asteroid and then home. They are also in physical danger as not all the conundrums are benign. The crew will make some startling discoveries along the way and the most startling of all is that the asteroid is actually a 'Honey pot', specifically designed to entice and then trap intelligent life forms for study and maybe further contact. Soldier or Terrorist? Advantages: An entertaining read and a warning Disadvantages: Many will be put off as it is classified as Science-fiction and Military. The Weapon by Michael Z Williamson. This is a hard cover book published in August 2005 in U.S.A. So what is 'The Weapon'? Many will tell you that it is a sword, knife or even a gun. In this case it is a human man, a soldier. A living, breathing, highly decorated storybook Advantages: Imaginative, rich and colourful short stories Disadvantages: A few stories are outdated and implausible Out of the plethora of science-fiction / fantasy writers, there is one author whose name immediately springs to mind. The Quantum Connection. Advantages: A Great Read Disadvantages: Sequel The Quantum Connection There is a secret war going on between Humanity and an alien civilisation. The only problem is humanity is unaware of the war; at least most humans are unaware. The United States have invented Warp speed and with it sent a few probes around the universe, unfortunately the probes have upset some aliens and they have declared war on the Earth. Steve Montana has his whole family wiped out by a freak meteor ... ...fact ends up captured by the aliens and awaiting torture. He must escape and thwart the aliens plan of complete domination of the earth. This story follows on from 'Warp Speed' and sadly there are many references back to that book. It spoils the book a bit if you haven't read that one. The writing however is good and the action and plot never slackens. All in all a very good read and one you can get into on the beach.
