"Aliens are coming"

Advantages: An entertaining read.
Disadvantages: Will not appeal to everybody, not even all science fiction fans.

This book I bought some time ago but have only recently got round to reading and re-reading. At first I thought it rather poor but I have changed my opinion since. A brief plot synopsis. This story set in the 30th century tells of the invasion of the human occupied part of the galaxy by an alien life form. This life form has been displaced from its own galaxy by a force they do not recognise. The distance displaced is meaningless as they can no longer ...
...no choice to survive but to colonise some other planets. Unfortunately these are already held by humanity. Following a long period of troubles humanity has colonised many star systems with different religious, economic or ethnic groups and has grown up to a certain extent. Wars are no longer fought. There are some small military craft that are used to discourage piracy but national armies are a thing of the past. Some military training still takes ...

Joe Donnelly is an author I came across recently, who I would say is the British version of a mixture of Stephen King and Richard Laymon. He predominately sets his stories in small towns or villages in Scotland where legends and myths abound. His writing style is excellent and he manages to describe scenes so vividly, you almost feel like an eyewitness to events, rather than just a reader. This book is set is a small town called Arden, that is ...
...It is written in the first person of a guy called Ryan, who grew up in Arden and is now returning to write a novel. Along the way he meets up with his childhood friends, and memories that have been buried, start coming to the surface, along with some terrifying incidents that make him realise that all is not well in the quiet little town of Arden. Definitely one that you’ll stay up very late too read, although maybe it’s not such a good idea reading ...

What! Again?!

Advantages: A new slant on time travel
Disadvantages: some will be confused

In a remote Scottish castle Sir Charles Ross, a genius in far out physics, has found a tiny flaw in the law of conservation of energy. There is a tiny amount missing. He has theorised that this missing energy has somehow gone backwards in time. It might be possible to code this to send a message backwards in time. He has called his grandson, Murdock from America to help him and others to experiment and understand this effect. During this experimentation ...
...them. Are there many possible futures. Could a message from a future X be sent backwards thus wiping out the said future X . Who would wish to wipe out their own existence. Then a disaster strikes at an advanced fusion reactor. Something that is a threat to the whole planet. Murdoch now knew who could send such a message, Himself, as he prepared to end everything he loved. This is a story of an alternate earth by James P Hogan. I say an alternate, ...

Closer to Heaven

Advantages: Great character building
Disadvantages: A little slow paced for my taste

Fantasy and science fiction are genres that mesh well together. Some authors have written successfully across both genres, but not usually in the same story. Jaine Fenn has managed to combine both in one book and it's an interesting read. One night, a stranger is found lying unconscious in a bog just outside the village of Dangwern. He appears to have come from nowhere and, apart from a strange piece of cloth lying near his naked body, there is nothing ...
...Unfortunately, this includes the stranger himself, as he is suffering from amnesia and has no idea even where he is, much less how he came to be there. Fortunately for Sais, as he is nicknamed, the boy who finds him is "sky touched". This means he is soon to travel to the City of Lights to be tested to see if he is worthy of being a consort of the goddesses. The village elders permit Sais and the boy's mother Kerin to accompany him to see if anyone ...
