Its not cricket

Advantages: Very funny
Disadvantages: none

...word processor of Douglas Adams Life, make reading Life, the Universe and Everything a very pleasurable experience This is the 3rd (but not final) book in the Hitchhiker’s guide to the Galaxy Trilogy, but don’t worry you don’t have to have read the preceding books to make sense of this one, just remember it’s not meant to make sense. The story starts with Ford and Arthur stranded in Earth’s pre-history, however they ...
...at Lords cricket ground just as England retain the Ashes (Cricket lovers will obviously notice at this point that this is a work of fiction). After the excitement of time travel, and an English win at cricket the crowd at MCC are further treated by the appearance of a spaceship from which deadly robots appear, killing and maiming all and sundry with cricket bats, before stealing the ashes and disappearing as suddenly as they appeared. But what’s ...

Shame It Ended Here

Advantages: Funny and witty novel from the late Douglas Adams
Disadvantages: Doesn't live up to expectations, seems incomplete

Douglas Adams' Hitch-Hiker's Guide 'trilogy' entertained and inspired me, and I was wary to read this final instalment due to reviews on the internet which suggested it was of poor quality and may hunder my enjoyment of the series. The fifth and final book chronicling the experiences of Arthur Dent and his less human comrades does seem much less original and enjoyable than the previous books, and although this was my opinion of the fourth book "So ...
...the way that book's style was taken in a different direction. This book seems to be a mix between the fast-paced comedy adventures of the first three books and the reflective, stationary nature of the fourth, and it doesn't fit together too well. "Mostly Harmless," once again taking the title from a memorable concept in the first book, occurs an unspecified several years after the events of the last book and sees the "thirty-ish, tall and never quite ...

The Salmon of Doubt - sad, amusing, exasperating and delightful

Advantages: Displays the sort of quirky brilliance that made Douglas Adams famous.
Disadvantages: Melancholy-inducing - this is the last chance to read anything new by Douglas Adams.

...Adams had just died at the age of 49, I remember feeling an acute sense of loss. This was not only because I was, and still am, a fan of his, and not only because he was dead and at a relatively young age. Quite a few of my favourite SF writers have died during my lifetime, including Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke, and while I've always felt a sadness and a sense that their absence has taken some of the light out of the world, there's also often ...
...The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the Dirk Gently novels, Douglas Adams still had a lot more to write about and would have taken his stories to some pretty exciting new places. There would have been another Dirk Gently book, of course, and then an embarking on who knew what amazing projects. Alas, it was never to be. Instead, we have The Salmon of Doubt, a posthumous collection of Adams's articles, bits and pieces salvaged from his ...

...after the end of the war between the Peoples Republic of Haven and the Manticoran Alliance and the galaxy seems to be settling down. However there are a quite a few hiccups upon the horizon. You see the Manticoran Government has been dragging out the truce over the last four years to their political advantage and the Havenites are beginning to get a bit irritated by this to say the least. The Andermani Empire is also making overtures into the Silesian ...
...Manticore Star League into a war of annihilation, with Honor right in the middle of the conflict, once again. War of Honor is the 10th novel in the Honor Harrington series and boy what happens here for any follower of the series is totally unexpected. In the previous novel Ashes of Victory the Manticore/Havenite war was won conclusively. But thanks to some of the most incompetent mismanagement believable the war looks to resume again. David Weber ...
