Fahrenheit 451
Advantages: Entertaining Disadvantages: None
...premise of Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. In a world that has gone mad, it centres on the war between censorship and freedom of thought. The protagonist, Guy Montag is the local firefighter, and he lives in an isolated society, where the totalitarian Government have tried to control independent thinking, by banning books.
The Government believe that people should be happy and carefree, and that books have a bad effect on them, by giving them ideas. ... ...assorted books, poems and plays. Fahrenheit 451 was originally published in 1950 as a short story, and was entitled, 'The Fireman'. It tells a cautionary tale of people so wrapped up in their wall to wall TV's, that they don't notice or care about issues happening for real, like poverty and warfare. None of 'that sort of thing' matters to these TV junkies, who just want more and more trivial, meaningless things to watch, in their perfect little cocoon ...

Incompitence
Advantages: Hilarious! Disadvantages: Humour might not appeal to all....
I became aware of Rob Grant after reading a DooYoo review of his book 'Fat' - it sounded right up my street, so I got it from BookMooch and thought it was absolutely hilarious. The other week I noticed that there was a copy of another of his books "Incompetence" available, so I mooched that too! Published in 2003, this is Rob Grant's third novel.
Rob Grant
Rob Grant was born in Salford, and is most famous for co-creating, writing and producing ... ...'Backwards' (a Red Dwarf book), 'Colony', and most recently, 'Fat'. You can find a bit more about him here - www.imdb.com/name/nm0335621 The Story
The story is set somewhere "in the far too near future" (quite scarily so), in a world where Europe is united and it seems to be virtually impossible to find a pair of shoes which aren't made of vegetable matter - leather is just out of the question. The world is a place where 'No person shall ...

It's Brighton, but not as we know it...
Advantages: Completely and utterly bonkers! Disadvantages: None!
...name is. Luckily for him, The Lad Himself, the Perfect Master, the Magus, the amazing Mr Hugo Rune has taken pity on his plight, plucked him from the veritable jaws of death and given him the chance to embark on what may prove to be the greatest adventure of his life! Or is it? Can he fully trust Mr Rune? A man who, every time he goes to a restaurant, seems to find a suspiciously similar-looking rat bone and thus avoid paying for the meal? A man ... ...12 mysterious symbols etched into the very fabric of Brighton itself, the Brighton Zodiac, featuring the Hangleton Hound and the Bevendean Bat. And why is there a thriving community of pirates living in Brighton? And why is the statue of Queen Victoria crying tears of Earl Grey tea? And what the heck is a Chronovision anyway? ***My ramblings ***
All the usual mad-cap antics that I have come to expect from the master of surrealist-anarchic-comedy-sci-fi-far-fetched-fantasy-fiction ...

Imaginative SF
Advantages: Imagination in SF at its best Disadvantages: No real action for fans of battles
Silverberg is a writer I tend to find as reliable. If I need a good book, having his name on the cover is usually a guarantee. This book does not break that guarantee, far from it. I found this book to be what Science Fiction is all about. The idea for this is a human colonised world where individuality is frowned upon, where uttering the word 'I' is considered obscene.
The author manages to portray what it must be like in such a society and how ...

Slightly left of anywhere
Advantages: The better end of Rankin humour Disadvantages: Disadvantages? No...
...of good form from Rankin, East of Ealing is an amusing trip from one end of Brentford to another. But, that said, it could be round the corner from you, happening right now, and there's the root of the beauty.
Look on a map of Brentford and you can follow the characters around the plot, but delve only slightly deeper and you soon realise that although the place is central to the storyline, it's also completely irrelevant. In a world where a pint ... ...say go forth and read. East of Ealing is one quality part of a great piece of work - the trilogy in 4 parts in 5 books. Which is now in 7. So whether this is your first or tenth flurry into the world of Rankin, I think, neh, guarantee you won't be disappointed. ...
