Hot Faerie Cakes

Advantages: fresh, original storyline, a modern slant on an old myth, and of course, Merry Gentry
Disadvantages: a bit confusing with all the different types of fey, but it becomes clearer

...general tone is written as a mix of fantasy and an alternate history. The point of deviation from normal history is when Thomas Jefferson gave the Unseelie and Seelie courts asylum after they were exiled from Europe. However, Jefferson said that they could not set themselves up to be worshipped as gods, or they risked being evicted from American soil. Meredith NicEsus is a faerie. No, she isn't two inches tall, and no, she doesn't have wings. She ...
...and twisted Cel. But being a faerie princess isn't all it's cracked up to be. Unfortunately for Merry, she not only has royal blood, but also lesser Fey AND human blood, which has left her mortal, which the sidhe don't take kindly to. Having staved off legal assassination attempts (in the form of duels) for years now, she realises that she is fighting a losing battle, so she flees. She moves to Los Angeles, where she assumes the name 'Gentry,' uses ...

...soon after the events of A Kiss of Shadows. It is December, and Merry and her lovers/bodyguards have returned to Los Angeles, where she has resumed working for the Grey Detective Agency and several of the guards have also joined the payroll. Disadvantages: not everyones cup of tea.

This is a return to the Mindstar world of Greg Mandel and Julia Evans. At a country retreat for a double Nobel laureate scientist and several promising students there is a particularly gruesome murder. The victim was the senior scientist. Several days later, Julia Evans is informed that said scientist was working on wormholes foe Event Horizon. No murderer has yet been caught. ...work as advertised. Greg, a retired Soldier and freedom fighter is now a citrus farmer. The warmer weather has changed the landscape and the crops. Some areas were flooded and some types of trees killed off by the altered climate. He is living mostly at peace with himself and his neighbours near the Rutland Water reservoir with his wife. Merry's Stroke of Midnight

Advantages: Meet new characters, more time spent in faerie, Once past the first few chapters a real good paced
Disadvantages: The beginning is slow.

...Laurell K Hamilton is a best selling author who has appeared in the New York Times best sellers. She published her first book when she was 29 which was called Nightseer, she then wrote a Star Trek book. Following this she started the Anita Blake series and then onto the Merry Gentry series, which the book I'm reviewing is from. She now lives in St. Louis, Missouri with her husband and daughter. On the Back I am Meredith Gentry, PI. Others know me ...

And unforeseen others bide their time, poised to strike. Such is the unease we feel that for the first time in our history we must allow ...

Baby rat learns his trade

Advantages: Good background if you are a fan
Disadvantages: Reads like it has the depth of a short story

...ambitions of Jim diGriz from a teen disaffected with the boredom of his pig farming home world "Bit O' Heaven" to a fully qualified rat. Jim's search starts with an unsuccessful attempt to learn crime by getting arrested and put in juvenile detention and progresses to attempting to find a criminal mastermind mentor to teach him his trade. For some reason the book reads as a short-story rather than a complete book despite it being longer that some ...
...If you are already a rat fan then you will be happy to read this and will probably get a lot out of it - if you are reading it as a stand alone book then it will be puzzling and probably disappointing. For the latter I would suggest you read a few others before this. General Info applicable to all the books: Although not vital it is better to read the Stainless Steel rat series in order (the dates are in the other reviews) as most of the books ...
