Advantages: A lovely story, well told, with engaging characters
Disadvantages: A bit short perhapse - ends too soon!

...successful – a classic! Dragonsong – Anne McCaffrey Corgi; ISBN: 0552106615 The official website http://www.randomhouse.com/delrey/pern/ seems to be a) American and b) about a year out of date, but nevertheless has some good information. PS in a purely technical sense this is Science Fiction, as per the classification. In reality it has more in common with fantasy. ...

That There Thread, It Still Falling...

Advantages: Everything! - Great plot, characters, writing, locations...
Disadvantages: It ends!

The first chronicle of Pern (DragonFlight) was fantastic. This is even better. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- Overview --------------- Many turns ago, the planet of Pern was colonised by humans. Metal was scarce on this world, so the fuel for the diggers soon ran out, and these were thereafter cannibalised for parts, and after some time were forgotten. The ships that brought the first humans to Pern were abandoned and lost. Pern had an enemy - a ...
...Every 200 turns or so, the Red Star would pass fairly close to Pern on its elliptical path around their sun. When this happened, a life form called "Threads" bridged the gap between the two planets and sucked the life out of anything that lie in its path. The first time this happened after the colonisation, the whole southern continent was stripped bare and small townships called "Holds" sprang up wherever there was rock - the only substance (apart ...

Back to where it all began - how dragons became man's best friend

Advantages: Enjoyable and gripping, provides plenty of background for the entire series of books
Disadvantages: A lot of names to remember

Who is the author? Anne McCaffrey is one of the world’s best –loved science/fiction fantasy writers, who has won the Hugo and Nebula Awards, as well as many others. She is probably best known for her Chronicles of Pern series, of which this is the eighth full-length novel (it is actually the ninth book, but the one immediately before it – Nerilka’s Story - is really more of a long short story!). What kind of book is it? Interestingly, ...
...fantasy, this particular novel has much more of a pure science fiction feel. This took me by surprise a little when I first started reading it, but after a while I found it to be rather refreshing and certainly no bad thing! Having said that, I’m only ever a moderate fantasy reader, and the Chronicles of Pern DO generally represent the limit of my tolerance for the genre (I prefer my fantasy to have at least some grounding in reality) so that probably ...

A lonely life

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

For Afra Lyon, T-4 assistant to the Rowan, Callisto's Prime, life is not always easy. He has had to deal with the Rowan's capricious temper, her meeting with and subsequent marriage to Jeff Raven, and lately her children too. By far the most difficult is young Damia, who can often be rebellious and wild. As she matures, she is sent to Aurigae, to work the Tower as Prime. This forces Afra to rethink his feelings for her, and he comes to realise that ...
...massive age difference, he hides his feelings. Meanwhile Damia, on Aurigae, is just as lonely, but quickly forgets this as she detects the presence of an alien mind in space. Is Sodan her true love - or is he a deadly enemy? Jeff Raven sends her brother Larak, and Afra, to investigate - but will they face deadly danger? Continuing the series begun by "The Rowan", McCaffrey provides Afra's perspective on events detailed in that novel, and beyond, ...
