FROM APEMAN TO SPACEMAN Advantages: Well written, good concepts and detail Disadvantages: Slight flaws in the structure and lack of theme development ...people believe that the film 2001: A Space Odyssey is an adaptation of Arthur C Clarke’s book but in fact almost uniquely for such a highly regarded novel the truth is the other way around. SiFi gets personal with Chasm City Advantages: Fast paced, action packed, complicated Disadvantages: Sometimes too complicated. Lacking some periferal character detail. ...the often rancid, often sterile Chasm City. Indeed it is a marriage of both Good and Evil, sanity and insanity, the dirty and the clean which septate with dramatic distinction the sometimes confusing shifts in plot, location and time. Much like some sort of cart running away from any form of user screeching around corners to the point, but not over it, of a spillage. In some ways it is the charm of this that there is little time for stability or ... ...Any criticisms can come in the form of the lack of peripheral character development, as many of them seem just hollow in comparison to Tanner and the other main individuals. And the oddly rigid form of first person narrative which is not wholly successful. A great and enjoyable read, complicated and fast paced. The Rowan - Anne McCaffrey Advantages: Good introductory to Sci FI Genre Disadvantages: Some areas are written in a simplistic style The outline of the story is based upon the colonising of space by humans who use the 'Talents' (people possessing Telepathic and -TKelekinsis abilities). The book revolves around a Talended young girl called Rowan where we explore her life from her early age when her family dies to a young woman. As a reader I also was able to understand the personal developments she makes whilst growing into a young woman and understanding her Talent abilities. ... ...make compeling reading and from the descriptive writing you can picture Rowan growing from a young child to a young woman. Another theme of the book is a alien threat from the Hive who are a bettle type being. The Hive seem to have a style that is similar to the humble bumble bee, but are more aggressive in nature. Anne has effectively described the Hives background and their need for expansion throughout the galaxy, which lays a good foundation ... 2061 Odyssey Three Advantages: more of the same, better? Disadvantages: is he covering old ground ...advanced from the previous outing. 2061 Doesn't disapoint in this respect. Clarke has a knack for retaining the same thrilling and mysterious atmosphere and premise of 2001 and 2010 whilst shifting the focus of the story to new characters and new aspects of space travel. It always amazes me how Clarke makes his narrative so accecable, readable and believable, and his attempts at predicting the advances in communications and technology through his ... ...the odyssey series is that each novel is not too long. It seems that since clarke helped make the benchmark for hard sci-fi fiction, novels have been increasing in size to gastronomic proportions, just look at peter f hamilton, kevin j anderson, alistair reynolds and co.
