The Rowan - Anne McCaffrey Advantages: Good introductory to Sci FI Genre Disadvantages: Some areas are written in a simplistic style The outline of the story is based upon the colonising of space by humans who use the 'Talents' (people possessing Telepathic and -TKelekinsis abilities). The book revolves around a Talended young girl called Rowan where we explore her life from her early age when her family dies to a young woman. As a reader I also was able to understand the personal developments she makes whilst growing into a young woman and understanding her Talent abilities. ... ...make compeling reading and from the descriptive writing you can picture Rowan growing from a young child to a young woman. Another theme of the book is a alien threat from the Hive who are a bettle type being. The Hive seem to have a style that is similar to the humble bumble bee, but are more aggressive in nature. Anne has effectively described the Hives background and their need for expansion throughout the galaxy, which lays a good foundation ... One Ship-Fish Loving Boy, and His Life on Pern Advantages: A continuation of the present era of Pern! Some old friends. Simple plot. Beautiful Dolphins! Disadvantages: Disconcerting jumping-perspective style. You'll have to read most of the library to understand this... The Dolphins of Pern is one of the books in the Dragonriders of Pern series of fantasy/science-fiction books (imagine a fantasy world with sci-fi roots which are gradually being unearthed by the characters.) Since all of the books of the Dragonriders of Pern series are so different, I'll be making lots of comparisons with other Dragonrider books to try to explain this one. Not up to the class of its predecessors... Advantages: Great descriptive prose as always... Beggining at the middle Advantages: History and background for the others Pern books, Good storyline Disadvantages: Predictable Synopsis: The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall, follows the story of the first human settlers on the planet of Pern. They have left the more occupied areas of space, run by greedy corporations and federations of warring planets to follow the dreams of a Utopian society on this planet that was surveyed centauries before. After taking many years of travel to get their, mainly in deep sleep cyro-stasis the book starts with the final approach and the ... ...computers and no space travel. The colonists decided to set the centre of their community on the side of a dormant volcano and as they settle into their new home the colonists find new wonders of Pern, like the small fire-lizards as well as bringing animals from home. Closer to Heaven Advantages: Great character building Disadvantages: A little slow paced for my taste Fantasy and science fiction are genres that mesh well together. Some authors have written successfully across both genres, but not usually in the same story. Jaine Fenn has managed to combine both in one book and it's an interesting read. One night, a stranger is found lying unconscious in a bog just outside the village of Dangwern. He appears to have come from nowhere and, apart from a strange piece of cloth lying near his naked body, there is nothing ... ...Unfortunately, this includes the stranger himself, as he is suffering from amnesia and has no idea even where he is, much less how he came to be there.
