So long, and thanks for all the laughs...
Advantages: Easily the the most intelligent and well-written book of the Hitchhiker's series. Disadvantages: Little input from some of the best characters.
...the Earth here after being so unexpectedly blown-up in the first book?
On the way home, he hitchhikes (not surprisingly!) and is picked up by a robust ginger-haired man called Rufus. Nothing particularly odd about that, until Arthur glances behind him and looks upon the sleeping woman-of-his-dreams; Fenchurch (named according to the London station where she was conceived...) But, before he can find out more about her, Arthur is dropped off outside ... ...again.
At length, he returns to his normal life on Earth - his apartment is still there, his friend's are still present and well and the destruction of the Earth branded as 'something funny in the water' - nothing more than a mass hallucination. It also appears that it's only been a few months since Arthur Dent's mysterious disappearance. But Arthur knows better and goes about finding the exact location of the cave he lived in, in Prehistoric Earth. ...

The doorbot is feeling friendly today
Advantages: Funny, witty , uplifting adn weird Disadvantages: it runs out of pages eventually
Following the sad demise of Mr Adams , I sought out the Terry Jones penned Adams inspired novel to glimpse once again the joys of his humour. The game is great, I recommend that too, but the book is probably a better read if you have NOT played the game.
It follows the basic plot of the game, but makes a few changes in the spirit of narrative coherance.
I mean, Terry Jones changes things so it makes some kind of sense.
An alien luxury liner craashes ... ...a parrot, and a sentient bomb (reminiscent of Dark Star). The robots decide, oddly, that a restaurant owner is the best person to help, they give him a suite (Standard class) and he spends a fair amount of the book trying to get his room upgraded.
The robotic staff are marvellously bureaucratic, the bomb is intent on exploding, but easily distracted from its 1000 to 1 countdown, (4,3,2.... "Hello, Bomb? Can you keep the parrot company?" 1000, 999, ...

Closer to Heaven
Advantages: Great character building Disadvantages: A little slow paced for my taste
Fantasy and science fiction are genres that mesh well together. Some authors have written successfully across both genres, but not usually in the same story. Jaine Fenn has managed to combine both in one book and it's an interesting read. One night, a stranger is found lying unconscious in a bog just outside the village of Dangwern. He appears to have come from nowhere and, apart from a strange piece of cloth lying near his naked body, there is nothing ... ...Unfortunately, this includes the stranger himself, as he is suffering from amnesia and has no idea even where he is, much less how he came to be there. Fortunately for Sais, as he is nicknamed, the boy who finds him is "sky touched". This means he is soon to travel to the City of Lights to be tested to see if he is worthy of being a consort of the goddesses. The village elders permit Sais and the boy's mother Kerin to accompany him to see if anyone ...

It is not just about football!
Advantages: It's very funny, and oh so true! Disadvantages: None
The Disc, for those who don't know, continues to float in space, supported by the elephants who ride the back of the great swimming turtle A'tuin. The Hub about which the planet spins is a centre of great magic, and best avoided if you want to live a happy and contented life. At the outer perimeter is the great circle sea which unendingly streams over the rim into the void, which is best avoided if you want to continue to live at all. Most Discians ... ...Smeems, for instance, is the Candle Nave at the Unseen University. He has to worry about keeping the candles not just alight, but properly melted, artistically, gothicly, dribbled, as it were. Of course, there's Trevor to help. And there's Nutt. With two t's. Trevor Likely has a tendency to skive off work whenever possible, and to kick a tin can around. His dad was a legend. Nutt is… well, no-one's quite sure what Nutt is, even him. Goblin isn't ...
