Meagre Offerings...?
Advantages: Goes along at a cracking pace with excellent side characters Disadvantages: Involnurability and losing it's detective inclination
Being the seventh in a series, I firstly must strongly suggest that the previous volumes are read prior to this one, as it will give you more depth to the characters. As many serialisations do, there are sections in the book that refresh the memory, but these are often brief, and not as fullling!
Anita Blakes world is filled with all the things that go bump in the night, vampires, zombie, werewolves, wererats and so on. From what I took from the ... ...roots, supporting the RIP Team to discover the source of the fires that seem to be directed towards vampire owned businesses, and I have to admit, the fact that Anita now fraternises with the beasts more than the humans did make for an interesting take, particularly in how the human RIP Team now deals with her. However, it ended up being more about Anita's relationship with her current and past boyfriend, and how Anita is increasingly becoming superwoman. ...

Back to basics
Advantages: Finally, after two books, Hamilton reinfuses the series with some of the horror and suspense that got me hooked in the first place, while keeping up the emotional tug of the ongoing storylines... Disadvantages: Eight books in and you could come to this one cold - but there's more to enjoy of you've read the others.
...werewolf pack. There's a Blue Moon coming, and even the most powerful of lycanthropes can't resist the urge to change when it does, and Tennessee is not noted for its tolerance of monsters. Anita has just a few days to spring Richard, find out who framed him and why, then get out of Dodge.
If only life were that simple. Her position as human servant to the St. Louis vampire lord Jean-Claude (also, not entirely coincidentally, the lover she cast ... ...incursion into their territory as a sign that Jean-Claude plans to take over, and they're ready for war. The local werewolf pack, while seeming to help, apparently have their own agenda. An old enemy of Anita's, who she slew some books back, appears to be trying to possess her. The local police are deeply corrupt, and in the woods something is tearing people apart, something more savage and terrifying than anything Anita has come across before. Huzzah! ...

You can take the girl out of the city -
Advantages: Some truly disturbing stuff in this one - as usual juxtaposed with scenes both refreshing and vibrant. The back-story is easier to digest for those picking this up before the others too... Disadvantages: If you've become used to the slick city beat normally walked by Ms. Blake and friends, the open air might spin your head a bit. Shouldn't think it will be a big adjustment though. You can take the girl out of the city...
'Bloody Bones' is the fifth of Laurell K. Hamilton's novels dealing with the life and times of Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter. Really, this review is part of a serial review of the series. While I won't be giving away any spoilers about this novel below, it's inevitable that I reveal some important information from the previous books - often stuff that served as the dramatic conclusions/revelations to those volumes. You have been warned…
You thought ... ...taken a bizarre turn with her love life. As 'Bloody Bones' opens, she is dating both Jean-Claude, the Master vampire of the city of St. Louis, and Richard Zeeman, second-in-line to rule the local werewolf pack. At some point she's going to have to make a choice, and the balance is tilting towards the werewolf. But if she chooses Richard, will Jean-Claude kill him?
Sounds like a good time to get out of the city, and 'Bloody Bones' gives her a chance ...

Title: Be careful what you wish for.
Advantages: An entertaining, light read Disadvantages: Will not appeal to many even some science fiction fans.
I do not always read new books. Sometimes I read older books. Ones that were published several years ago but by authors I like and have finally tracked down a copy.
Such a book is this one. Briefly the story:- An alien race has desires on our planet. An easy way of fighting an interstellar war is to capture several of the natives, exhaustively study them and then to tailor a biological weapon. One that works rather slowly so that the enemy dies ... ...machinery rather than have a catastrophic failure or have to damage any infrastructure yourself with various explosive devices. But there may be side effects with bio-weapons. So best to take plenty of time so that all should be cleared up before you arrive.
But overnight something has happened to mankind. At least two thirds of the population has vanished in very strange circumstances. Cars are smashed on roads but are empty, their drivers nowhere ...

Oh! Bug, er Bugs!
Advantages: Suspence, Murder Mystery story Disadvantages: Strange to some
...hundred fold, man size to bug size, equals a reduction in mass by eight million.
There have been books and films of persons reduced in size. The Disney film from 1989,"Honey I've shrunk the kids", 1971 Lindsey Gutteridge's 'Cold war in a Country Garden' and 1977 'Manalone' by Colin Kapp.
In the first two, humans are reduced in size, but retain their full intellect. Good film, good special effects but very poor science. In Colin Kapp's book people ... ...Here after some time the people start to loose their intellect as the brain is a simpler organism in its reduced size.
In this story the people retain their size and experience by direct neural coupling. This may not be as far fetched as it sounds. Have you ever heard of Waldo’s? This term was introduced by Robert Heinlein in his book 'Waldo' back in 1950. G Harry Stein used the idea in his book series 'Warbot' in 1988.
And you will have seen the ...
