I like the Uplift Saga

Galactic Civilisation revolves around uplift - where a Patron species "Uplifts" Client species to intelligence. However Humans achieve this on their own and manage to achieve patron status by having already uplifted Chimps and Dolphins to full inteligence. ...mainly water world where they have to repair their ship. With internal struggles between two Dolpjin strains while hiding from the aliens there is always a lot going on. There are about 10-15 main characters, and you can always remember who is who. I recommend the whole Uplift Saga to anyone who likes good quality science fiction. Buy this series - you won't regret it!! ...

Advantages: A fine conclusion to the series
Disadvantages: Not quite as good and the previous instalment

Closer to Heaven

Advantages: Great character building
Disadvantages: A little slow paced for my taste

Fantasy and science fiction are genres that mesh well together. Some authors have written successfully across both genres, but not usually in the same story. Jaine Fenn has managed to combine both in one book and it's an interesting read. One night, a stranger is found lying unconscious in a bog just outside the village of Dangwern.
