Pride is not enough.
Advantages: An entertaining work of fiction that can make you think. Disadvantages: Not to everybody's liking, unfortunately.
Synopsis:
The war between the Alliance and the Syndic worlds has gone on for a long time. There has built up a great legacy of distrust, suspicion and even hatred between the two sides. It wasn't always so but now atrocity is matched by atrocity.
The Alliance thought it had a chance to strike a knock out blow and so end the war. But this has gone badly. Their fleet is faced by an even bigger Syndic fleet in the Syndic's home system.
On the way ... ...rescue a survivor from a previous battle, one that had taken place about 100 years before. The sole survivor is a Captain John Geary who was assumed lost in this previous battle and been promoted to legendary hero status.
He has been asked to assume command of the fleet and to get it home at all costs. Now he is faced with newer technology and getting the fleet back to their own sector of space. Captain John Geary is a man who has the older ideas ...

Is Dune the best SF novel ever?
Advantages: Scope, detail, characters, worms, spice! Disadvantages: I really can't think of any
I first read Dune back in 1985 mainly because there was a big movie of the book coming out. Since then I've read it a number of times and I think it's probably my favourite novel.
The book can be read on many levels. I find myself enjoying it for two reasons. First of all it's a great adventure story with Paul and his mother on the run from the evil Harkonnens across the strange desert world. Different factions are working behind the scenes to leverage ... ...for the unique universe Herbert created. The details fly off the page. The descriptions of the Great Houses, the Sisterhood, the Guild are totally convincing. And the little details such as the workings of a stillsuit add more layers.
If you've not read it then give it a chance. If you have read it then read it again! ...

Has time run out for the Doctor?
Advantages: Good plot, quick read Disadvantages: Weak characterisation of the Doctor
...box set of ten new Doctor Who novels from ebay for a very cheap £5, and 'The Clockwise Man' is the first book in the set. It's the second Doctor Who novel that I've read, so I have something to compare it to. It's a good, quick read that should appeal to both adults and children alike.
**Blurb** (from back of book)
In 1920s London the Doctor and Rose find themselves caught up in the hunt for a mysterious murderer. But not everyone or everything ... ...faceless killers closing in, the Doctor and Rose must solve the mystery of the Clockwise Man before London itself is destroyed...
**Plot** (minor spoilers)
Being the very first of the New Adventure Doctor Who novels, this features the ninth Doctor (as played by Christopher Eccleston) and Rose Tyler. In my mind, this adventure takes place after "The Unquiet Dead" in series one, and this seems to fit as here, the Doctor and Rose seem to know each ...

Have a look Inside my world!
Advantages: informative, interesting, attractive Disadvantages: pricey RRP
...the BBC phenomenon that is Doctor Who. The sci-fi family show may have been on our screens on and off since 1963, but it only came into my life back in 2005 with the new series. Straight away I fell for the glorious Time Lord that is the Doctor (in the form of David Tennant), and longed to be companion Rose (played by the lovely Billie Piper). In my quest to try and involve myself with the show as much as possible, I went on a hunt for merchandise. ... ...eyes to the world of Doctor Who in a completely different light. One of these is 'The Inside Story'. Published in October 2006, it is one of the first fact books from the new series, and I feel this does make it that little bit more exciting. The hardback book can be recognised by its very attractive cover. It has a sleeve on the top, with the same design on the hardback underneath. It has a main colour of orange, to match the Doctor Who logo which ...

Back to where it all began - how dragons became man's best friend
Advantages: Enjoyable and gripping, provides plenty of background for the entire series of books Disadvantages: A lot of names to remember
Who is the author?
Anne McCaffrey is one of the world’s best –loved science/fiction fantasy writers, who has won the Hugo and Nebula Awards, as well as many others. She is probably best known for her Chronicles of Pern series, of which this is the eighth full-length novel (it is actually the ninth book, but the one immediately before it – Nerilka’s Story - is really more of a long short story!).
What kind of book is it?
Interestingly, ... ...fantasy, this particular novel has much more of a pure science fiction feel. This took me by surprise a little when I first started reading it, but after a while I found it to be rather refreshing and certainly no bad thing! Having said that, I’m only ever a moderate fantasy reader, and the Chronicles of Pern DO generally represent the limit of my tolerance for the genre (I prefer my fantasy to have at least some grounding in reality) so that probably ...
