Gateway - the Final Frontier?

Advantages: Great characters and cleverly structured
Disadvantages: The domestic violence bit sticks out like a sore thumb

...with lasers instead of swords, Gateway is part of the Arthur C Clarke, Bradbury and Asimov school that seeks to extrapolate fantastic worlds from real current science, and examines how science and technology could affect the peoples of those worlds. In the future, Earth is massively over-populated - and starving. Food is synthesised from hydrocarbons, and there's not enough to go around. Life is brutal and grinding poverty is everywhere. For the ...
...of a vanished super-race, Gateway is a huge space station filled with alien ships. Huge amounts of money are promised to brave prospectors prepared to fly off on pre-set courses in search of alien technology and artifacts. Robinette Broadhead is such a prospector. The entire narrative is related by him, and alternates between his adventures on Gateway, and his subsequent sessions with a robotic psychiatrist. This is an old novel, 1960s vintage, but ...

Galactic North

Advantages: fills in a lot of gaps
Disadvantages: some weaker stories

Galactic North is a companion pice for Reynolds Inhibitors series. It takes the storyline from the near future all the way to 25 thousand years hence. The book takes the form of a set of short stories, some spooky, such as Nightingale which is the exploration of a 'ghost' ship to deep time with Galactic North, which is the flag ship of the book. Galactic North itself is the reason why many Reynolds fans will want this book as it explains the rather ...

People in Glasshouses

Advantages: Great Read
Disadvantages: Ending was convoluted with significant plot holes

...fast paced and witty. Glasshouse has a Stepford wives come Truman Show feel with some interesting psychological/sociological aspects to refelct upon. The plot at one point (well there may be more but I have a soft spot now) gets a little silly, just wait til you find out whats in the basement and how he wraps the story up, but because he's such a good story teller I went along with him and it worked. Not his best book but a cracking holiday read. ...

Ever try to hide a weapon in a little red dress?

Advantages: fascinating world, intriguing characters, interesting crimes
Disadvantages: none that I can think of!

...My Thoughts: Guilty Pleasures was first released back in 1993. I am baffled as to how I could have overlooked this series for so many years, but in exchange I've had the pleasure of reading the series back to back from book one straight through to book fifteen, The Harlequin, over the past three months. Things have a way of evening themselves out. Hamilton's first book in this series set its hooks deep into the mind of this reader, and I'd have to ...
...of this life. Guilty Pleasures is the name of the strip club Jean-Claude runs, but it is also an apt description of Anita's feelings about the events that unfold in this book. Here, we are just being introduced to Anita, her powers, and her world. All the books to follow just help add a little flesh to these rather appealing bones. "Pity is an emotion that can get you killed. The only thing more dangerous is blind hate, and maybe love." Anita may ...

It is not just about football!

Advantages: It's very funny, and oh so true!
Disadvantages: None

The Disc, for those who don't know, continues to float in space, supported by the elephants who ride the back of the great swimming turtle A'tuin. The Hub about which the planet spins is a centre of great magic, and best avoided if you want to live a happy and contented life. At the outer perimeter is the great circle sea which unendingly streams over the rim into the void, which is best avoided if you want to continue to live at all. Most Discians ...
...Smeems, for instance, is the Candle Nave at the Unseen University. He has to worry about keeping the candles not just alight, but properly melted, artistically, gothicly, dribbled, as it were. Of course, there's Trevor to help. And there's Nutt. With two t's. Trevor Likely has a tendency to skive off work whenever possible, and to kick a tin can around. His dad was a legend. Nutt is… well, no-one's quite sure what Nutt is, even him. Goblin isn't ...
