The Proteus Operation by James P Hogan

Advantages: Highly enjoyable read
Disadvantages: none

...1974 and President Kennedy faces the biggest challenge of his administration. The Nazis have control of Europe and most of the rest of the world. Only North America and Australia remain and they are close to defeat. In America snippets of Intelligence suggest that the Nazi war machine has been receiving technological assistance from an unknown organisation called Overlord that appears to originate from the future. Leaps in technological advance ...
...and dates that are in the 21st century. In response, the Proteus team is assembled. A group of scientists aided by crack commandos will go back in time and attempt to redress the balance by providing relatively advanced technology from 1974 to the world of 1939. Using a hastily constructed time machine with blueprints 'retrieved' from sympathisers within the secret organisation aiding the Nazis and without fully understanding the technology that ...

What! Again?!

Advantages: A new slant on time travel
Disadvantages: some will be confused

In a remote Scottish castle Sir Charles Ross, a genius in far out physics, has found a tiny flaw in the law of conservation of energy. There is a tiny amount missing. He has theorised that this missing energy has somehow gone backwards in time. It might be possible to code this to send a message backwards in time. He has called his grandson, Murdock from America to help him and others to experiment and understand this effect. During this experimentation ...
...them. Are there many possible futures. Could a message from a future X be sent backwards thus wiping out the said future X . Who would wish to wipe out their own existence. Then a disaster strikes at an advanced fusion reactor. Something that is a threat to the whole planet. Murdoch now knew who could send such a message, Himself, as he prepared to end everything he loved. This is a story of an alternate earth by James P Hogan. I say an alternate, ...

Reflections in time.

Advantages: Thought provoking. (For me anyway)
Disadvantages: Will not appeal to everybody.

Let me tell you about a book just recently published and read by myself. First some plot elements:- According to the archaeological record, the inhabitants were extinct on the third planet long before humanity arose on the Second planet. There appears to have been some form of global disaster, war or plague that wiped them all out. Their space going science was not supposed to be as advanced as that of the second planet humans. Also it would appear ...
...planet. The second planet is a hard place. Lots of bare lava fields and a hot, humid and sulphurous atmosphere. There are no seas, but there are some very large swampy areas. But persons have stated how pleasant it is on third planet. Open water, clear skies and such a remarkable variety of geography. In fact a place that seems very suitable to live on. So we are presented with a bit of a mystery at the start of this new book by James P Hogan. ...

Peace can be a good read too

Advantages: Intelligence, plot, ideas
Disadvantages: A number of somewhat underdeveloped characters

...was surely Joe Haldeman's 'The Forever War.' This is not strictly speaking a sequel to this novel, but it is a 'companion peace' in as far as the attitude to war and politics is the same. Haldeman, it is clear, has little faith in the American political system, believing it to be wide open to incompetency and corruption. An act of incompetence unknowingly sets in motion the events of Forever War, and much of the danger in Forever Peace stems from ...
...the world, and much of Forever Peace is concerned with trying to prevent just that. The big s.f. element of danger comes from an experiment that could recreate the big bang (the reasoning for how this would happen even makes a kind of sense to my addled brain). The attempts to shut this deadly experiment down open up a way to world peace into the bargain. Haldeman is very much 'into' world peace, and from the amount of time his protagonist spends ...

You've brought back a what?!!!

Advantages: A further entertaining read in the Giants Saga
Disadvantages: Not to everybodys taste

The story so far. The finding of a dead man on the moon was the first link in a chain. A gigantic spaceship was found frozen into the Moon Ganymede and other evidence of human occupation on the moon was discovered. All this lead to the conclusion that a Planet named Minerva had once existed where the Asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter now is. It was destroyed by a combination of a massive nuclear war and its own thinner crust. But there are ...
...previous volume left off. First a glimpse into the past where a group of the Giants are experimenting on a Sun to try to increase the heat output with disastrous effects. The giants escape the resulting explosion, but there craft had been undergoing maintenance and cannot slow down easily. That is going to take time, lots of it. Jump forward to the present day in this solar system where Dr Hunt and others are still investigating the wrecked space ...
