Robert Heinlein, First and Best
Advantages: A very entertaining thoughtful reat Disadvantages: Not to every ones liking
Starship Troopers by Robert A Heinlein. Published in 1959.
Very brief synopsis:-
With this book you follow the life of one Juan (Johnny) Rico from his enlistment in the Federal Service, Mobile Infantry, up to his command of a platoon of these troops in an Interstellar war. Mankind is facing a Bug like alien species, something like a giant ant crossed with a spider. Johnny Rico comes from a background of wealth and privilege and through peer pressure ... ...who has completed a minimum two year service has the Right to vote. Not everybody wants to serve and thus vote.
A good part of the book is taking up with his time at boot camp and the training he undergoes. Running in the background that we are not aware of is the situation that is getting steadily worse, going from normal peace time through a state of emergency to a full war. The reasons for this we are not told.
This book is written in the third ...

Much read
Advantages: Thought provoking Disadvantages: Can cause you to look at life on Earth differently
Although the language and the social mores illustrated in this novel are outdated by modern standards, many pf the ideas and concepts raised are still challenging.
Michael, the hero of the book is the offspring of members of hte first manned trip to Mars. When his parents die, he is raised by the local inhabitants, until he is 'rescued' by the next mission.
Michael returns to Earth, bringing with him a whole new outlook on life.
During the course ... ...my ingrained opinions and taboos. it deals with sexual fidelaty, monogomy, insest, canabalism and several more...not always in a way that is flattering to the human race.
This is a novel that changed the way I think. It made me consider everything that I had previously acccepted as the absolute truth.
It is a novel I re-read at interval, and one that I always recommend to someone exploring the more meaningful side of sci-fi/fantasy. ...

Rewarding
Advantages: Sheer brilliance! Coherent, convincing, consistent scenario. Disadvantages: Very difficult to get into.
I'll be honest: Riddley Walker is a very strange book and will not be to everyone's taste. But I enjoyed it, and this site is supposed to be about opinions, no?
Hoban has written for both adults and children, but this is the only book of his that I've read, and it's most definitely in the 'adult' bracket. It has complex, mature themes, and even if a child could understand it, I believe it would be profoundly disturbing for anyone before their teens. ... ...used for Riddley Walker makes it, like A Clockwork Orange, very hard to get into. However, once this initial hurdle has been overcome, it is a very rewarding read, not only first time through but on each subsequent reading. Persevere and it is very much worth the effort. ...

A Good Sci-fI Novel
Advantages: GOOD READ Disadvantages: NOTHING
DOUBLE STAR.
Author – Robert Heinlein
I recently picked this book up from a small book seller for 60p and read it over 2 night shifts.
60p well spent.
The story follows Lorenzo as an out of work actor who suddenly gets offered the acting role of his life.
At first he thinks he is just being set up as a stooge or a fall guy for any lurking assassins who might want to bump off the character he has been hired to double for.
But things ... ...forward. Soon Lorenzo is visiting Mars, meeting Martians, arranging world changing events, having an audience with Willem the Royal Emperor of the known Universe, oh and yes avoiding the odd assassin.
He is surrounded by an eclectic cast of friends all of whom are fighting to keep him safe and protect him from their own secrets.
There is a love interest, of course, and many political twists and turns along the way to a surprising finale.
This ...

The Puppet Masters
Advantages: You can put your feet up, and have some tea, and relax. Disadvantages: None
...mere baby compared to The Puppet Masters, released in 1951. Incidentally, a film adaptation of The Puppet Masters was released in 1994, starring Donald Sutherland.
So what did I think of this book?
I found it quite absorbing, though, I admit, I liked it better the first time I read it, around twenty years ago. It appeared more frightening and plausible then, and although I still enjoyed reading it this time, I am not worried that these slug things ... ...wipe us out. Well, The Puppet Masters is just such a book, and nicely written too, even if I find the way Heinlein writes women as just eye candy, who should really be doing the dishes, not to my liking. But I can ignore that, because the story is so good.
Heinlein has written a huge amount of work, which varies from rubbish pulp to some of the twentieth century's finest writing, and in all his writing, at least he always managed to include well ...
