Robert Heinlein, First and Best

Advantages: A very entertaining thoughtful reat
Disadvantages: Not to every ones liking

Starship Troopers by Robert A Heinlein. Published in 1959. Very brief synopsis:- With this book you follow the life of one Juan (Johnny) Rico from his enlistment in the Federal Service, Mobile Infantry, up to his command of a platoon of these troops in an Interstellar war. Mankind is facing a Bug like alien species, something like a giant ant crossed with a spider. Johnny Rico comes from a background of wealth and privilege and through peer pressure ...
...who has completed a minimum two year service has the Right to vote. Not everybody wants to serve and thus vote. A good part of the book is taking up with his time at boot camp and the training he undergoes. Running in the background that we are not aware of is the situation that is getting steadily worse, going from normal peace time through a state of emergency to a full war. The reasons for this we are not told. This book is written in the third ...

Much read

Advantages: Thought provoking
Disadvantages: Can cause you to look at life on Earth differently

Although the language and the social mores illustrated in this novel are outdated by modern standards, many pf the ideas and concepts raised are still challenging. Michael, the hero of the book is the offspring of members of hte first manned trip to Mars. When his parents die, he is raised by the local inhabitants, until he is 'rescued' by the next mission. Michael returns to Earth, bringing with him a whole new outlook on life. During the course ...
...my ingrained opinions and taboos. it deals with sexual fidelaty, monogomy, insest, canabalism and several more...not always in a way that is flattering to the human race. This is a novel that changed the way I think. It made me consider everything that I had previously acccepted as the absolute truth. It is a novel I re-read at interval, and one that I always recommend to someone exploring the more meaningful side of sci-fi/fantasy. ...

A Kiss of Shadows

Advantages: Much better than the anita blake series, not so much repetition, easy to get into, the plot thickens as the set continues
Disadvantages: too much erotica, but as you read on the reasons for this are obvious

A Faerie princess fleeing from the harshness of her aunts high court, looses herself in the hussle and bussle of busy city life, living hidden under a new name, not daring to speak her real name, less the Aunt hears the whisper of it carried to her through the darkness. As far as everyone knows, the princess is believed to be dead. Working as a Detective for a supernatural firm, she is eventually found and finds herself entwined in the politics of ...
...in a new series written by Laurell K. Hamilton. The story line is a little slow to begin with, but once you are into the book you can't put it down. The twists and turns within the book keep you enthralled to the end, leaving you wanting to read on to find what happens next. ...

Oh the pain!

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

Well, it's Monday again, and yet again I'm yawning my way through it. This time it's the fault of 'The Final Fury' by Daffyd Hugh, which I decided to get out of the way last night....... I finished it around 3am this morning. And the funny thing is it wasn't even that good. It was more like an irritation I wanted to be done with. Hmm. Well, first of all he kept calling 'Voyager', *the* Voyager, which really got on my, um, nerves. There were quite ...
...calling KJ Kathryn and Katherine at different times. I think this may be a young or a new writer (and I'm probably completely wrong there, so just ignore that last comment). But what makes me say that is the way buzzwords were repeated over and over when they were only marginally effective in the first place - e.g. all that about there being swashes to buckle came up three times, I counted, and then there was an extra 'swashbuckling' thrown in just ...

Closer to Heaven

Advantages: Great character building
Disadvantages: A little slow paced for my taste

Fantasy and science fiction are genres that mesh well together. Some authors have written successfully across both genres, but not usually in the same story. Jaine Fenn has managed to combine both in one book and it's an interesting read. One night, a stranger is found lying unconscious in a bog just outside the village of Dangwern. He appears to have come from nowhere and, apart from a strange piece of cloth lying near his naked body, there is nothing ...
...Unfortunately, this includes the stranger himself, as he is suffering from amnesia and has no idea even where he is, much less how he came to be there. Fortunately for Sais, as he is nicknamed, the boy who finds him is "sky touched". This means he is soon to travel to the City of Lights to be tested to see if he is worthy of being a consort of the goddesses. The village elders permit Sais and the boy's mother Kerin to accompany him to see if anyone ...
