Asimov - The Complete Robot
Review of The Complete Robot - Isaac Asimov by 89kab

Advantages: Excellent compilation of all things robot
Disadvantages: Contains stories already in previous compilations

...10 stories involving Susan Calvin the worlds best (and only) robopsychologist. Many of the stories are very clever, if you are a fan of Asimovs work you will know the 3 rules, many of the stories revolve around these rules and include clever interpretations of these rules. Some of the rules involve good robots, others involve special robots with interesting quirks. Some of the stories are just short little stories with hardly a mention of robots, ...
...bit boring but have a nice moral to the story. If you have other compilations you may well have read some of these, but there are new stories for people who have read all the other compilations. Go out and buy it if you enjoy robots, short stories or Asimov. ... Read review

To the Beginning of the End of an Empire
Review of Foundation - Isaac Asimov by Shroud

Advantages: beautifully written and engaging story, well rounded characters, thought provoking storyline
Disadvantages: none

...of artificially intelligent beings. His Foundation series is also seen as one his most important contributions to the genre and it is the first book, Foundation, that I will detail further now that we have the background of the author under wraps. ~~~~The Book~~~~ Foundation is the first book of a trilogy that was later further expanded. It began life as a series of four short stories for Astounding Magazine which were printed between 1942 and ...
...on trantor, and that the Foundation they have formed to administer and oversee the Encyclopaedia, is also in reality the very rebellion they have acquitted Hari of. Hari and the others see the decay and rot within the halls of government, replete with foul corruption, and wish to carry out their work without its influence tainting their efforts. So off they all go to Terminus, and officially begin the great work of the Foundation, and begin to collect ... Read review

Foundation Trilogy
Review of The Foundation Trilogy - Isaac Asimov by overlordstowell

Advantages: Great sweeping plot
Disadvantages: none

Some of the best books i've ever read. Just the sheer sweeping scale of what is covered in the books is genius. The characters are memoralbe, unlike most books whos characters you forget the next day. The plot to save the universe from complete destruction is one of the most over used plots ever concieved but Asimov writes so it compelling and fresh, not dry and cliched. Hopefully some who will read will understand the thinly veiled religous imagery ... Read review

Going Back To The Future With Asimov
Review of Pebble In The Sky - Isaac Asimov by tom1clare

Advantages: Fluent and enjoyable read, characters explored better than in Foundation, clever view of the future
Disadvantages: Characters linguistics are dated as are elements of the science, tricky to attain these days

...all, Earth is but a pebble in the sky.” It's a running theme in a great deal of Asimov's novels – a refreshing view of a galaxy that does not centre around Earth and a writing-style that is not necessarily shackled to the sole portrayal of our own planet's (usually dominant) position in humankind. Though Pebble In The Sky, his first published novel, is set on Earth, it defies convention by portraying the birthplace of humankind as something of a ...
...find a paperback copy of Pebble In The Sky (PITS) on eBay for only £3-4 – though as a consequence of seeing little or no major reprints down the years even in the wake of Foundation series popularity (the last minor reprint coming after his death in 1993), my copy of the book is around fifty years old, and is unlikely to be available to buy new in any great numbers. Pebble In The Sky was the first of three books that would comprise the Galactic ... Read review

Let the Darkness Swallow You Whole
Review of Nightfall - Isaac Asimov by Shroud

Advantages: one of the most iconic stories of the genre ever written
Disadvantages: excelnt, but nowhere as great as the original short story

This is one of Asimov's best ever tales, and is based upon a short story he wrote by the same name. That short story was to be one of the most famous and influential short stories of the genre for all time, actually being named as the best science fiction short story ever written. The original short story was written in 1941, and appeared in the September issue of Campbell's Astounding Science Fiction magazine. We have more than just that to thank ...
...quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson to Asimov one day. The quote was, " If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God! " Asimov's response was very apt. What we get in the short story (and the expanded novel version), is a tale of a world that is ringed by multiple suns, so that at no time is it ever in natural darkness. Various professionals ...
