One of his finest
Advantages: A story of epic proportions Disadvantages: The book can sometimes get lost in its own complexity
...the universe of the 'Culture', Look to Windward is based around the encounters of a multitude of characters as they await a space-station mind's celebrations to mark the anniversary of a great genocide. As the characters, a mix of diplomats, assassins and composers, begin to swing from system to system, the ... ...are literally unimaginable then sample Look to Windward. It is however an epic book, a space opera rather than what I like to call 'normal' stories (drama, crime, love etc.) set in space, therefore perhaps one to avoid for the casual sci-fi reader.
I hope you enjoy a book which I have read again and again. ...

Learning the world, one review at a time...
Advantages: Brilliant depiction of alien society Disadvantages: Ho hum sunliner full of augmented humans
...how we might react to learning we're not alone in the universe. From government cover-ups and conspiracies to all-out interplanetary war, aliens coming to visit is a science-fiction staple. Learning the World - a novel of first contact
In Ken MacLeod's Learning the World, however, humanity has a long way to go before meeting new life. MacLeod suggests a universe so vast that humans conquer space travel and colonise vast numbers of star systems ... ...we are the invaders. And most of the ship's crew has a different opinion on how to go about things. Aboard the sunliner 'But the Sky, My Lady! ...word processor of Douglas Adams Life, make reading Life, the Universe and Everything a very pleasurable experience

The story starts with Ford and Arthur stranded in Earth’s pre-history, however they ... ...at Lords cricket ground just as England retain the Ashes (Cricket lovers will obviously notice at this point that this is a work of fiction). After the excitement of time travel, and an English win at cricket the crowd at MCC are further treated by the appearance of a spaceship from which deadly robots appear, killing and maiming all and sundry with cricket bats, before stealing the ashes and disappearing as suddenly as they appeared.
But what’s ...
