A new tale in the Recluce saga.
Advantages: The latest offering in the Recluse saga, very interesting Disadvantages: A fantasy that will not please everybody
This is the latest offering in the long running saga of Recluse. So far I have not seen any loss of energy or entertainment in these works.
Briefly the synopsis:
Kharl, once a humble cooper is now proved to be an Order Master Mage and has been made a Lord with his own lands by young Lord Ghrant, the ruler of Austra. Kharl is summoned back to Valmurl, to assist Lord Hagen the lord chancellor . As an order mage Kharl can tell when somebody is not ... ...the lying actions of a powerful factor and shortly after, rebellion breaks out again. Kharl must use all of his powers against powerful Hamoriam White Wizards and others lords and Arms men. Blood is spilt and powerful magic's are performed before order is once again achieved.
Promoted, rewarded once again Kharl returns to his new lands to try to live at peace, but is still troubled by Hamorian intentions. He worries over what is left of his family ...

The Rowan - Anne McCaffrey
Advantages: Good introductory to Sci FI Genre Disadvantages: Some areas are written in a simplistic style
The outline of the story is based upon the colonising of space by humans who use the 'Talents' (people possessing Telepathic and -TKelekinsis abilities). The book revolves around a Talended young girl called Rowan where we explore her life from her early age when her family dies to a young woman. As a reader I also was able to understand the personal developments she makes whilst growing into a young woman and understanding her Talent abilities.
... ...make compeling reading and from the descriptive writing you can picture Rowan growing from a young child to a young woman. Another theme of the book is a alien threat from the Hive who are a bettle type being. The Hive seem to have a style that is similar to the humble bumble bee, but are more aggressive in nature. Anne has effectively described the Hives background and their need for expansion throughout the galaxy, which lays a good foundation ...

Dragonsong – Anne McCaffrey
Corgi; ISBN: 0552106615
The official website http://www.randomhouse.com/delrey/pern/ seems to be a) American and b) about a year out of date, but nevertheless has some good information. PS in a purely technical sense this is Science Fiction, as per the classification. In reality it has more in common with fantasy. ...

Learning the world, one review at a time...
Advantages: Brilliant depiction of alien society Disadvantages: Ho hum sunliner full of augmented humans
...how we might react to learning we're not alone in the universe. From government cover-ups and conspiracies to all-out interplanetary war, aliens coming to visit is a science-fiction staple. Learning the World - a novel of first contact
In Ken MacLeod's Learning the World, however, humanity has a long way to go before meeting new life. MacLeod suggests a universe so vast that humans conquer space travel and colonise vast numbers of star systems ... ...we are the invaders. And most of the ship's crew has a different opinion on how to go about things. Aboard the sunliner 'But the Sky, My Lady! The Sky!', it's clear that a lot of evolution separates the characters in the novel from you and me. The engineers are so accustomed to working in zero-gravity that they can't walk on two feet without a great deal of practice. At adulthood, young people get access to all sorts of groovy augmented abilities. ...

Moving along nicely.
Advantages: A well paced Sci-Fi story Disadvantages: Not everyone genre or style.
Moving Target - Elizabeth Moon. Also known as Marque and Reprisal. ~ About the Author ~ Elizabeth Moon is a Sci-Fi and Fantasy writer of some considerable note. What makes her writing fairly unique though is the fact she has a military background, attaining the rank of Lieutenant with the US Marine Corps, who she joined in 1968. She is also an experienced paramedic, has at least one degree in History and has been involved in local government at various ... ...in her novels, and Moving Target is no exception. ~ The Book ~
This is the second book in a series of 4 (although a 5th is due to be published sometime in early 2008). It is very much a Sci-Fi novel, so not to everyone's taste. The series has been described as being 'Space Opera' - A term I hadn't heard of, but having looked, describes it as being a sub-genre of Sci-Fi that emphasis romantic adventure, has characters that are larger than life, and ...
