A Different Style of SF Advantages: Original Disadvantages: Lacks action if that's what you're after This is one of those SF books that has what might, at first, be seen as an unusual and possible dull storyline. We have an Alien Art Historian hired to trace pictures painted of what seems to be the same woman at various times throughout history. This, however, is a thoroughly engrossing book from an author who has not let me down as yet. I have read a number of his books and all of them so far have been worth recommending. Advantages: Continuation of great plot and characters Disadvantages: - The book ‘Children of God is the sequel to Mary Doria Russell's award winning first novel, ‘The Sparrow’. In this we take up once again with Father Emilio Sandoz, the only survivor of a doomed expedition to a nearby planet, set in the not-to-distant future. In that first novel, a team of Jesuits and others set sail to the nearby star system of Alpha Centauri to discover the source of unexplained radio transmissions which sounded quite a lot like ... ...disastrously for the expedition team, and the only survivor of that group was Sandoz, brought back to earth. Most of the characters from the first novel have died (in this novel we discover how a few of the missing people from the first expedition met their fates), and due to the effects of near-light-speed travel, many decades have passed on earth while Father Emilio is still relatively young. Short and Reasonably Satisfying Advantages: Easy writing style Disadvantages: Short and not all that fleshed out ...book is one of them. The central character is a bounty hunter (another familiar figure in Resnick's books) who encounters a beast travelling amongst the stars that had been thought to be a myth. He then dedicates himself to catching it. This is a short novel but within it the author has packed a fairly enjoyable little story.
