The Rowan - Anne McCaffrey
Advantages: Good introductory to Sci FI Genre Disadvantages: Some areas are written in a simplistic style
The outline of the story is based upon the colonising of space by humans who use the 'Talents' (people possessing Telepathic and -TKelekinsis abilities). The book revolves around a Talended young girl called Rowan where we explore her life from her early age when her family dies to a young woman. As a reader I also was able to understand the personal developments she makes whilst growing into a young woman and understanding her Talent abilities.
... ...make compeling reading and from the descriptive writing you can picture Rowan growing from a young child to a young woman. Another theme of the book is a alien threat from the Hive who are a bettle type being. The Hive seem to have a style that is similar to the humble bumble bee, but are more aggressive in nature. Anne has effectively described the Hives background and their need for expansion throughout the galaxy, which lays a good foundation ...

One Ship-Fish Loving Boy, and His Life on Pern
Advantages: A continuation of the present era of Pern! Some old friends. Simple plot. Beautiful Dolphins! Disadvantages: Disconcerting jumping-perspective style. You'll have to read most of the library to understand this...
The Dolphins of Pern is one of the books in the Dragonriders of Pern series of fantasy/science-fiction books (imagine a fantasy world with sci-fi roots which are gradually being unearthed by the characters.) Since all of the books of the Dragonriders of Pern series are so different, I'll be making lots of comparisons with other Dragonrider books to try to explain this one. This means that unfortunately readers with no experience of McCaffrey's world ... ...deals indirectly with the immediate aftermath of the events in "Red Star Rising", and continues the story of some of the characters from "The Renegades of Pern" The book also gives an idea of what might be in store for us in "All the Weyrs of Pern". If you're reading, or are about to read "The Renegades of Pern" you'll probably find some of the details of this review to be a spoiler, although they'll pass you by if you aren't familiar with the characters ...

After The God Squads
Advantages: convincing world-building, complex plot and thought-provoking ideas Disadvantages: flat characters
The world post Faith Wars (or Oil Wars, as the fundamentalists are inclined to call them) is both very different and, at the same time - as it should be in relatively close-future s-f - uncannily similar to ours. It's a world of the Second Enlightenment, where, at least in Europe, religion has been truly separated from politics and became a genuinely private and societaly marginalised activity. Terrorism is history and the global warming has been ... ...of churchgoer-bashing God Squads in the aftermath of the Faith wars. But it's all about to change when a priest and then a bishop are killed in what hints at a return of fundamentalist violence. But is it really? Soon the godless join the religious on the list of targets and the plot thickens, connecting Scottish clubs, an Australian creationist theme park and outer space, with new Gnostics, cyber-veterans and Christian fundamentalists figuring prominently. ...

Not up to the class of its predecessors...
Advantages: Great descriptive prose as always... Disadvantages: ... but characterisation and plot development lacking substance.
...(due to their similarity to the mythical creatures of earth) were developed to combat an unthinking but deadly enemy called Thread, which fell towards Pern from a nearby planet termed the "Red Star" every 200 years or so. Another plan involving genetically engineered grubs was hatched but this fell out of memory, as did the origins of human life on the planet. This is the third chronicle of Pern. In the first (DragonFlight), Weyrleader F'Lar and ... ...time to save Pern from the Threadfall. In the second (DragonQuest), the Oldtimers (those brought forward in time) are not too happy with the changes in Pern since their time and start causing trouble. Also the Thread begins to fall in unpredictable patterns, and an object of the early settlers is discovered, which allows small objects to be magnified. Copying this technology, the Craftmasters of Pern manage to create a basic telescope, and thus begin ...

It is not just about football!
Advantages: It's very funny, and oh so true! Disadvantages: None
The Disc, for those who don't know, continues to float in space, supported by the elephants who ride the back of the great swimming turtle A'tuin. The Hub about which the planet spins is a centre of great magic, and best avoided if you want to live a happy and contented life. At the outer perimeter is the great circle sea which unendingly streams over the rim into the void, which is best avoided if you want to continue to live at all. Most Discians ... ...Smeems, for instance, is the Candle Nave at the Unseen University. He has to worry about keeping the candles not just alight, but properly melted, artistically, gothicly, dribbled, as it were. Of course, there's Trevor to help. And there's Nutt. With two t's. Trevor Likely has a tendency to skive off work whenever possible, and to kick a tin can around. His dad was a legend. Nutt is… well, no-one's quite sure what Nutt is, even him. Goblin isn't ...
