A mind bending story of artificial realities
Advantages: A very novel and surreal look at life Disadvantages: Hard to follow and too outside of the box
...starts to unfold around him. Time and logic really start mind bending when objects around him start fading away and in time, the reality of the illusion is uncovered. So why the illusion and where is he really living? What is his role in the new existence.
MY THOUGHTS
I love the surreal nature of science fiction that completely thinks outside of the box. This book achieves this in abundance and creates an entirely new set of rules for existence ... ...whether to recommend this book to friends as it really is down to individual preference and how your own logic works. It didn’t entirely work for me but there again I am glad that I read it. Please take the time to rate this review. Thank you ...

Inside Dick's worldview
Advantages: Utterly readable and compelling Disadvantages: You probably need to be interested in the author to enjoy it
This is a minority view, but in my opinion the posthumously published "Radio Free Albemuth" is Dick's best book. Although a first draft of the novel that eventually became "VALIS", this original version is very different, and to my mind preferable as it tells a more coherent story.
The narrator is an sf writer called Philip K Dick. In the early seventies Dick underwent some experiences which he interpreted as religious. He became convinced he was ... ...out which God or why. "Radio Free Albemuth" was his first attempt to address these issues in a science fiction framework. He splits himself into two characters, Dick the writer and his friend Nicholas Brady, and pits them against the forces of darkness as personified by President Ferris F Freemont - a fictional version of Nixon.
"Radio Free Albemuth" is literally insane, a paranoid book inspired by Dick's own delusions. Yet it remains as compelling ...

Ubik Will Melt Open Your Mind
Advantages: Brilliant Disadvantages: Outrageously Surreal, Complex
This book is an outstanding piece of surrealist science fiction unlike mostly anything else, ever. The language is terribly clever, but not unwieldy and certainly accessible. The characters are not terribly filled out, but that's really appropriate for Philip K. Dick's everyman style of writing. This reads something like "Death of a Salesman" if it were written by Sartre. It's one of my favorite books by Philip K. Dick, even if it's a little less ... ...his other books. Actually, its very difficult to absorb the ideas Philip K. Dick puts into his stories, but they're super-saturated with oblique commentaries on the state of mankind and the human condition. I loaned this book out to my friends and family, and was surprised at how well-received it was among folk who don't read much science fiction. Really, like all the good Philip K. Dick stuff, the spaceships are the least important, and the pinball-bouncing ...

Great concept but still a dull book.
Advantages: Great idea. Disadvantages: It was such a dull book I could not even finish reading it.
The concept of this book is brilliant - a world where the Axis powers won the war, Africa is wiped out and North America is divided between Germany and Japan. However, as much as I wanted to like this book and this 'legendary' sci-fi writer, this book was just...dull. Another example of a classic people rave about that just isn't a good read. I tried to battle on with this book only leave it lying in my parent's car not bothering to retrieve it.
... ...writing style and, well, how the novel revolves around men in high places (yes I am aware of the title). I think that if you were reading a story that imagines such an alternate future you'd want a little more perspective from the common person. I respect Dick's status as a writer but this bored me to tears. ...

Closer to Heaven
Advantages: Great character building Disadvantages: A little slow paced for my taste
Fantasy and science fiction are genres that mesh well together. Some authors have written successfully across both genres, but not usually in the same story. Jaine Fenn has managed to combine both in one book and it's an interesting read. One night, a stranger is found lying unconscious in a bog just outside the village of Dangwern. He appears to have come from nowhere and, apart from a strange piece of cloth lying near his naked body, there is nothing ... ...Unfortunately, this includes the stranger himself, as he is suffering from amnesia and has no idea even where he is, much less how he came to be there. Fortunately for Sais, as he is nicknamed, the boy who finds him is "sky touched". This means he is soon to travel to the City of Lights to be tested to see if he is worthy of being a consort of the goddesses. The village elders permit Sais and the boy's mother Kerin to accompany him to see if anyone ...
