1'st Sight of Brentford Advantages: Music, Time Travel, Strange Moustaches Etc etc Disadvantages: Time Travel makes me dizzy I read this book on holiday it was meant to last me through the holiday but I actually read it in 1 day. Mostly because I stayed up all night reading it. This book should come with a disclaimer not to read it when you have a drink as time travel makes you very dizzy and you need to lay down. The characters you meet are brilliant. I loved the character of Soap Distant but this was the 1st time i had met any of the characters and I was a bit confused ... ...through time and sanity. Mostly marred by insanity I think. It contains so many twists I can't even begin to explain the story. You meet Soap Distant (traveller to the centre of the earth) first who seems about the sanest character in the story and like so many people he is chasing his 15 minutes of fame but he comes back to a world very different to the one he left. New author on the block Advantages: It's Star Wars Disadvantages: Same old thing...another terrible threat to the New Republic... ...in the world of the Star Wars Extended Universe, The New Rebellion sadly lacks on a few basic levels. The main problem was that she obviously had little to work with. Most of the good storylines and possible new foes for the New Republic have been taken up. Grand Admiral Thrawn as the remaining Imperial officer of note, The Ssi-Ruuk as the alien invaders, the witches of Dathomir...all done. So, what do we have left? Brakiss as a fledgling dark ... ...that it is interesting to Star Wars fans. The only trouble is the seemingly large lack of knowledge about Star Wars that the author has. C-3PO seems off character with his less than witty retorts to R2-D2 and the use of the character Cole Fardreamer, whilst good, the name is just far too yucky... One of the good things was the use of Han Solo going to Smuggler's Run and dealing with all the trouble there. Snuff Fiction Advantages: Very Funny, Great ending Disadvantages: None ...his own vision. In snuff fiction a character who survived the millenium tells his life story. The book seems to lack direction for the most part drifting from event to event, but this doesn't matter because the indivdual events are told so excellently and are hugely funny. Towards the end it starts to pick up pace and all the events of earlier come together and build to one of the most satisfying endings I've ever read. A Different Style of SF Advantages: Original Disadvantages: Lacks action if that's what you're after This is one of those SF books that has what might, at first, be seen as an unusual and possible dull storyline. We have an Alien Art Historian hired to trace pictures painted of what seems to be the same woman at various times throughout history. This, however, is a thoroughly engrossing book from an author who has not let me down as yet. I have read a number of his books and all of them so far have been worth recommending.
