DOCTOR WHO - THE STEALERS OF DREAMS
Advantages: good read Disadvantages: nothing new
Doctor Who: The Stealers of Dreams.
The travelling trio arrive in the not so far future and find that Fiction has been outlawed. In fact anything that makes the mind think too much or adds to mans desires and fantasies is against the law, the penalty being death.
Who can be controlling society with such an iron grip and more importantly why?
The Doctor, Rose and Jack arrive and soon are in touch with the resistance ... ...nothing new added to the Doctor Who legacy.
The writing is clear and crisp and the plot moves along t a brisk pace.
This is a decent read but you will forget it not long after putting it down.
Recommended to be read once but only if you're a fan.

Deep into the future
Advantages: thought provoking and engaging Disadvantages: maybe too much jargon
...Future. That is what Baxters Time gives us... a time line between the day after tommorow and the end of time.
It follows a set of characters who want to start mining the asteroids, in order to do so they dispatch a spacecraft containing a genetically engineered intelligent squid, Sheena, out into space then follow themselves. In the course of their adventure they encounter an artefact and use it to travel further and further into the future and ... ...part of a trilogy (and a set of short stories) however each book takes the characters from the start again and plants them in a different universe, For ecample in this one the univerese has no aliens but in Space aliens are everywhere. An interesting concept. The question that each book covers is why the universe is like that.
Overall a fantastic read, deeply thought provoking and intelligently researched and written. It may be a little too technical ...

Voyage - Just another 'Mars' novel
Advantages: Strong on detail Disadvantages: Tedious; been there!
Unusual in that it is set in an alternative past (as opposed to the future) in which JFK survives his assassination attempt, this is however a fairly tedious addition to the 'Mars novel' collection. Although detail and character is strong throughout the book, it reads in parts simply as an alternative history of NASA, abeit seen through the eyes of astronauts. Most of the 'twists' are fairly predictable (the inevitable technical setbacks at different ...

Enemies Old and New for the Doctor and Rose
Advantages: Great plot, fast-paced, good characterisation Disadvantages: A fair bit of technobabble
...The TARDIS takes the Doctor and Rose to a destination in deep space - Justicia, a prison camp stretched over seven planets, where Earth colonies deal with their criminals.
While Rose finds herself locked up in a teenage borstal, the Doctor is trapped in a scientific labour camp. Each is determined to find the other, and soon both Rose and the Doctor are risking life and limb to escape in their distinctive styles.
But their dangerous plans are complicated ... ...an interesting one: separate the Doctor and Rose and imprison them. On reading the back of the book, I wondered how this seemingly simplistic plot would be enough to sustain a book for 250 pages, but of course the imprisonment is just a scratch on the surface.
I see this book taking place after 'The Long Game', and the Doctor and Rose's relationship - where he is incredibly worried about her and she only wants to get back to him - seems natural ...

Battleaxe, Enchanter, Starman
Advantages: Great pace and enthralling characters Disadvantages: Far too short.
When a series of books have been described as "the best Australian fantasy novel" a reviewer has ever experienced there has to be a hint of "SO!" when reading. However the description would work easily as well if you drop the Australian. This series is by far one of the best Fantasy series I've ever read.
The storyline concerns Axis who is the leader of the Axe-Wielders , the military arm of the religious faction known as the Seneschal. The Seneschal ... ...trees are evil and thus the land of Tencendor has been swept clean of all but a handful of forests. As the storyline progresses we are introduced to the other races of Tencendor, the Avar and the Icarii who the Seneschal refer to as the Forbidden. Once the three races lived in peace now they are mortal enemies. Slowly Axis begins to see that things are not quite the way that he has been brought up to believe. Thus begins his exploration of his own ...
