"News, Ideas, Innovation"
Review of New Scientist by BlueMidget

Advantages: Interesting and often entertaining articles
Disadvantages: Occasionally becomes a little too technical

...have included things regarding potential new treatments for cancer, articles about climate change and even new discoveries in the field of evolution. Generally speaking the writing style within the magazine is very readable and pitched at such a level that even if you're not familiar with the subject matter, you can still grasp the general meaning behind the theories or discoveries being discussed. I'll admit that occasionally I find myself a little ...
...the article and take a new piece of knowledge and understanding away with them. As well as having current news articles, the magazine also has regular columns, most notably 'Feedback' and 'Last Word'. 'Feedback' tends to deal with amusing and quirky things readers have stumbled across in their travels such as entertaining warning signs, (you know the sort of thing, "Caution - May Contain Nuts" on the back of a packet of peanuts, etc.). I personally ... Read review

Psychologies - an interesting but patchy read
Review of Psychologies by Bitchqueenofneworleans

Advantages: Some interesting stuff covered and good journalism
Disadvantages: Some weak articles and repetition

I subscribed to this after getting one edition free with Red Magazine, who are Psychologies' stable mate. I subscribed for a year or so, but I no longer subscribe. I still occasionally buy it, but I found an edition every month was a little too much navel-gazing for me, to the point where it could end up being a bit of a downer... and I knew that with a new baby I'd be unlikely to have the time to read as many magazines as I previously have. It ...
...pull-out sections on careers and personal development. For me, the biggest disappointment was the monthly column written by Dr Pamela Stephenson (Mrs Billy Connelly). She's apparently a well-respected psycho-sexual counsellor in the US now, but I found her articles facile and irrelevant and not very interesting. It may be that limiting her to a one-page article was a mistake, as she never seems to get into her stride. I've kept several articles from ... Read review

Education with a difference
Review of National Geographic by razzer246

Advantages: good articles, great value
Disadvantages: none

I have subscribed to national Geographic now for seven years and have loved every single issue. I enjoy this magazine because there are a wide variety of subjects covered including history, geography, the environment, science and everything in between! I think that the magazine has some brilliant writers and also some even better photographers. Included in the articles are things on topical issues like global warming and pollution and what is being ...
...and also stories on wildlife. I could be here all day writing what sort of subjects are included. Some of the people who contribute to the magazine seem dedicated to getting to the truth of the story the are trying to tell, and I think that comes across in the magazine. I think that for £29 per year, this magazine is well worth every penny. I may not be interested in every article thats in each issue, but there is always something of interest to ... Read review

The Greatest Gadget Mag on Earth!! (probably)
Review of T3 Magazine (Tomorrows Technology Today) by jonessn

Advantages: Keeps you up to date with the latest tech!
Disadvantages: Reviews can be a little delayed

...to the latest video jukebox. T3 also does a good job of using a range of products, not just focussing on the major brands such as Sony, JVC, Apple etc. but giving other makes a fair trial, and often spotting a bargain for the cheapskate reader (yours truly!) The group tests are also great in helping you decide what next to empty your wallet on. The latest issue containing a group test on 3G phones and sports mp3 players are informative, summarizing ...
...as when a team of T3 employees went on a trip in the most off-road ready Jeep anyone has ever laid eyes on! The mag is packed fairly full with adverts, but these are almost always gadget-related and if anything are a bonus, showing you where exactly you can get each product from! So, to summarize, this mag is great for those of us who are just generally interested (and often awe-struck) by the latest gadgets from around the world, it is informative ... Read review

Something to read (other than Ciao!)
Review of Focus by miketurner

Advantages: Informative and entertaining
Disadvantages: Some information duplicated on TV

...questions on any subject and Focus provide the answers. Questions can range from serious things such as "Why does corrosive acid not melt its container ?" to "Why do pigeons bob their heads when they walk ?". The back of the magazine is called "The Guide" and summarizes the best TV programs for the following month, new books, DVD's, websites, gadgets, games and letters. Interspersed throughout the magazine are 7 or 8 features. The only drawback ...
...be reading an article and think to yourself "I'm sure i've just watched a program about this recently", then at the end of the article it will say "Watch Horizon on BBC1 at 9pm,etc, for more". I don't read many magazines but I find this one so interesting that I took out a years subscription to it, and eagerly await its delivery every month. It is priced at £3.40 at the time of writing. ... Read review
