Last Call for the Planet?
Review of The Final Call - In Search of the True Cost of our Holidays - Leo Hickman by
Claiiiree
Advantages: an easy to understand book that covers a complex range of issues
Disadvantages: finding the right balance in tourism is always going to be a difficult one
...have a massive impact on the environment as a whole. Granted it has positive effects, particularly in developing countries on their GDP. But the damage it is doing might one day be greater than any benefit, if it continues to grow relatively unchecked as it is doing at the moment. The book "The Final Call: In Search of the True Cost of Our Holidays" is published by Eden Project books, and was first printed in 2007 a fact that becomes apparent as ... ...is the third in a series of ethical living titles by the same author. Leo Hickman himself is originally from Cornwall, close to where the Eden Project now stands, although he now lives under the flight path to Heathrow airport - and it is perhaps the endless noise, night and day, of living in such a place that made him think about the impact of tourism on a global scale. He also writes for the Guardian newspaper, and he famously tried to live as ...

Maths for primary teachers-a must
Review of Mathematics Explained for Primary Teachers - Derek Haylock by
naughtyangel69
Advantages: detail of knowledge, teaching points, covers everything
Disadvantages: none I can think of
...trainee teachers prepare for the Mathematics QTS skills test. I have not used the disk as I passed the test before getting to it, but can look back and say the questions on it are good practice, and also give a good indication of where knowledge is lacking, as do the self assessment questions.
I have the paperback version of the book, which I have seen at a variety of prices, between £16 and £19.99. This might sound like a lot of money for a Maths ... ...or you just need some ideas on ways to explain things to pupils who are struggling, then I think it is well worth the money. It's only 341 pages long, and doesn't take up too much space.
I woudl recommend this book, it is one the I'm sure I will refer back to every now and again as Maths has a habit of finding it's way out of my brain.
The ISBN number is 1-4129-1183-4 and is published by Sage publications, and can be found at a much better, lower ...

A well guided journey through interesting concepts
Review of Hyperspace (A Scientific Odyssey Through Parallel Universes, Time Warps, and the Tenth Dimension) - Michio Kaku by
lufcwls
Advantages: Easily followed with diagrams for 80-90% of it
Disadvantages: Lots of abbreviations that continue throughout without reminder
Im not a big phsyicist or Mathematician but it was fairly easy to follow most of Michio Kaku's explanations, some of the diagrams were extremely helpful in describing his points. This is not a fictional book, it is based on actual scientific theory about subjects that may seem fictional but (in theory) may not be. For example time travel, worm holes, parallel universes, 4th, 5th, 6th.. etc dimensions and so on. Although this book may seem very complicated ... ...not too difficult. Although some of the terminology may go on for several chaptors and easily be forgotten as other terms spring up that are very similar it is not all that bad and is actually extremely intersting. The man from the paper world was a particular really interesting highlight/concept for me. I do recommend this book and have given it to many of my friends to read too. ...

Bill Bryson - history made interesting!
Review of A Short History of Nearly Everything - Bill Bryson by
mickle026
Advantages: very funny and light
Disadvantages: you loose track of time...may need to re-read a few parts
...was given this book as a gift, and a gift it was, a proper geeks book! Love it! **geek (those fascinated by things mundane to the majority)
Its starts off telling you how the start of the universe began, taking you through various light hearted descriptives that are actually based on scientific explanations (fairly easy to understand, or at the least follow) to the first embers of life, and onto the way the world evolves and will eventually end. ... ...funny throughout. Some of the facts in this book are quite frightening when you sit back and think of them. Anyone who reads this book will certainly enjoy it. I learned a lot from this book and went away to try and find out more. Educationally encouraging. ...
