*****UPDATE:

We have now cleared the arrears and a deferment form has been sent to us.
As I am still angry with this SLC I wanted to share once again my frustration with you and moreover making you aware of the low service they offer.
To resume, Stuart phoned in order to make sure we don’t owe anything from the arrears and the person at the other end of the phone said we are clear as of today. he also asked for a deferment form so the lady checked our details and guess what, they were wrong. The address she had on the screen was 2 years old. No wonder why Stuart never received anything in the first place. but the consoling side is that being meticulous I kept all the correspondence we sent them and have letters of the SLC acknowledging our changes of address. And one of them is hand signed by a head manager. So why is our new details not shown on their data. This will explain the bother Stuart has been in since the beginning and I tend to think we were in our rights to claim this was a clerical mistake of their part and we shouldn’t have to pay anything back as our income doesn’t reach the level they fix. So once again because of their lack of competence we had had to pay back for something we shouldn’t have.
So do not take any s**t from them at all and make sure they do have your file up-to-date. It is so easy to mess people around. I just hope now to have finished with them.

When I first heard of the Student Loan Company I thought great: u get the money straight, low interest, don’t have to pay back if your earnings do not exceed something like £15000 a year. This is certainly much better than a bank loan which interest rate can get extremely high. But when my boyfriend started to have troubles with the service I suddenly changed my mind

First of all I will give a quick brief of this place: basically it is a service owned by the UK Government and any student can apply for. You just have to fill in an application form, give few details and then they will tell you if you are eligible or not. The company operates within the policy set by the Government and it is a Student Support Scheme.
The amount you have to pay back will depend on the amount borrowed plus the interest charged. Interest is linked to the rate of inflation and is adjusted each year. As far as I am concerned the rate should not exceed 3% or something like that. If you are eligible to defer repayment of loans, the company sends you a deferment letter each year where you state your current salary. They will then tell you if you are still deferred till the next year.

This is where the fun starts…I mean the stress…
My boyfriend was deferred every year until once he didn’t receive the deferment form. Since then he only had hassles from the loan Company asking him to start paying the arrears they say he is due. This amount corresponds to the deferment that he never got in the first place. I have known him for 3 years and you can be sure than every single month he received 2 letters reminding him his debts. The thing is that each account that they send a letter for gets charged £12 meaning that £36 is added to the total.
He obviously got in touch with the company explaining his situation but they simply replied they couldn’t do anything and that they will pass the case to solicitors…, which they did. We had no choice than to arrange a suitable direct debit transfer. But we could’ t afford much. And this was even not enough to cover the monthly interest. So we stopped the standing order. I can tell you my partner was frustrated and stressed, totally fed up with the whole thing. The situation got worst when he got unemployed. The hassle was still there so he decided to contact competent services to deal with the problem. But it did’ t do any good. The company first acknowledged the fact of the lost of his job so he got deferred but then we received 2 giro books asking us for repayment. I think it is because we changed of advisor and this one was a bit tougher than the previous one. I personally think it is not professional at all to agree for one thing and then to pull back. But we managed to take the charges off (corresponding to the reminders sent) which are a great relief but we are still in arrears. We are aware of that but we just want to put these arrears back on the accounts until we get a financial position.

So if you want to get a Student Loan be sure to respect every aspect of the agreement and be sure they will not leave you in peace if you omit something.
And another thing is that the repayments start back if you earn £10000 and not £15000 any more. Why? Because they have been loosing too much by setting the amount to £15000. So be aware.

Oh! I'm so angry for you! That's ridiculous, Natwest pulled a similar stunt with me (not updating my address) £3 overdrawn turned into £346 with all the charges and interest and I had to take out a loan to pay it back!
