The thing that catches your eye about this particular box of Scots Porage Oats is the way the word porridge is spelt (No not the attractive looking Scottish Guy in the kilt!) The spelling Porage is used. (Which confuses my spell checker on Word!). Porage is the proper Scottish name for oatmeal heated and mixed with milk or water. Whereas I like to eat my porage with sugar and syrup on top real Scots use salt! But I have an excuse I’m not Scottish!

Scots Porage Oats in my opinion is the best porridge brand around and for half the price of similar products like Oats So Simple you get a hefty 1KG box of Oatmeal, which lasts for ages and costing £1.34 from Tesco but you must cosume the packet within two months. I chose this as I love my porridge and Oats So Simple was getting so expensive to buy every week as it didn’t last me long enough.

The packaging for Scots Oats is a cereal style box and I chose the new easy pour pack where you just lift the top of the box up and out comes the cereal straightaway, it not encased in a inner package like normal cereal and oats. The box has a picture of a nice hunky Scottish guy throwing a shotput on the cover, with the words Scottish Porage Oats emblazoned across half his kilt. It also points out that the oats are original Scottish Milled Oats and have the true taste of Scotland. On the otherside there is a lovely recipe to make with your oats, my box had a recipe for fruit and oat scones which I look forward to making at somepoint.

According to the box Scotts Porage Oats have been milled in Scotland since 1880 , they grade and select each individual grain so that only the best oats go in the box and they create their own distinctive taste by rolling thicker oats to bring out the true taste of Scotland.

Scots make you very aware of the benefits of eating porage on the box as they contain a soluble fibre which when eaten as part of a low fat diet can help lower cholestrol and maintain a healthy heart.

There are two ways of making your oats, the first way is simply mix as much oats as you like with either water or milk and put in a uncovered bowl and bung in the microwave for 3minutes or the traditional way like me who does not have a microwave at the moment is to just simply mix up the oats in a saucepan to as much or as little as you want and stir slowly on a medium hob until you get the desired consistency. Pour into a bowl and add extra milk if needed. If your like me and have a sweet tooth and as recommended on the box, I went out and got some Lyons Golden Syrup and mixed a teaspoonful of Syrup into my porridge to sweeten it up and it’s delicious! I will one day be daring and try the salt version but with slightly high blood pressure at the moment this is off limits!

The taste and smell of these oats/porage is top notch, very creamy and tasty and smells pleasant,it doesn’t get too stodgy like some porridge oats do.

Forget Ready Brek,Oats So Simple go and get a big box of Scots Porage Oats and taste the real warm taste of Scotland on those cold winter mornings like I do!
