THE fastest ISP in the UK, as rated by Internet Magazine. It takes on average less than 9 seconds to download a UK webpage compared to those ranked in positions 3 and below which take 16 seconds plus, Worldonline as the ISP is now called, (previously known as Screaming.net) is twice as fast as most ISP's when it comes to UK sites. The difference for U.S. and other European sites is less of a gap due to geographical network distances but any speed differential is welcome.
Their ISP service is first rate and availiablity is almost 100%, rarely do you get a chance to hear an engaged tone, and the mailservers are fast. Send an email to your self, and you get the message almost instantaneously. There also appears to be no limit on the attachment size as I have received 8mb files as attachments.
Your email address is configured as anythingthingyoulike@username.worldonline.co.uk and allows you to have unlimited email aliases, as anything@username.worldonline.co.uk all gets sent to your mailbox. Great for the family or for creating 'tagged' email addresses for web form submissions (so you can track who is sending you the junk mail!)
Just dialup using their local call rate 0845 number and pay your normal phone charges for internet access to their World Online 'Classic' plan. They also offer free hours a month sort of a capped hours unmetered access (read my other article 'FASTEST ISP' in the Access with subscription/Payment section).
You can sign up at their website worldonline.co.uk ...quite good topical content too. Faster than freeserve, AOL, BT internet, OneTel, 24-7 Freecall, NTL, IC24 (at time of writing) but try for yourself.
Advantages: Free Disadvantages: slow at times, problems with email retrieval, Expensive Tech support
I have been with Screaming.net for almost a year now. As I am not always home during the day, and therefore do not use the internet during peak times, I was horrified when i got a letter through my door telling me that world online had taken over and I now had to pay £14.99 a month line rental for 24/7 free access, rather than my £9.25 off peak free access. I, and obviously many others complained about this, and it was reinstated, so there is now ... ...internet for free. There is no change in the telephone line quality, as it is still in essence a BT line. World online rent out lots of lines from BT, at reduced rates, then rent them on to us cheaper than we can get from BT. So the only change is the admin side of things, which is a bit hit and miss! For example, my monthly bills come about every 2 to 3 months. So you do have to be good about putting money aside, but if you were paying quarterly ...
In the beginning, last year Screaming was a free ISP from Tempo with a difference, free calls as well as subscription after 6pm every night. As my internet bills were averageing £80 a month this saved me an awful lot of money!
After a while, a lot of people signed up and the service couldn't cope, it got very bad and ugly for some months, and it took me up to 3 hours to dial up.
After upgrading however, the service became very reliable and much ... ...connect first time all the time, downloads are anything up to 6Kb/sec on my 56K modem, and best of all calls are free 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, all this for £14.99 a month including line rental, its too giid to miss!
On a slight downside, no free web space is given, this isn't a problem at all though, www.freewebspace.net lists 100's of companies who give away free ad-free webspace, so anyone can compensate for this. ...
Advantages: 24 hrs access Disadvantages: Occasionally slow due to increased demand
...have been a member with screaming net for over a year now. Initially it seemed that the company would not last, there were slow connections and at times one could not log on at all. However, as they had said, slowly but surely the services started improving, and changing over to screaming net through localtel was now paying off.
However, since being taken over by worldonline, and since the introduction of 24 hours free internet account at £14.99 ... ...problem will disappear as it did the last time.
I certainly think screaming net is a good ISP. When a company starts off new, they all have problems, but after sometime they are established.
For 24 hours free internet access, £14.99 is not at all bad to pay! ...
Advantages: Good speeds now and the cheapest unmetered I know Disadvantages: Billing, Caller Display expensive
When Screaming first started the service was truly awful and its only just about a month ago that they finally sorted out the dial up problems which I have endured for almost a year. Plus the speeds are good since screaming.net were equired by World Online.
I would now recommend this service now to anyone not currently on an unmetered ISP. It is cheaper than BT surftime. If you opt for the off peak deal it costs no more on top of the standard W.o.L. ... ...with BT surftimes off-peak deal, Screaming off peak lets you surf for free between 6pm - 8.30am weekdays, I believe BT is only free from 6pm - midnight.
The only problems I have now is that BT select services are more expensive ie caller display is horrendously overpriced. Plus billing can be a problem although this is BTs fault for not passing on the data correctly and on time to World-Online. ...

i have had screaming.net for a long time now and it has been very good. screaming.net offered you unlimited internet time to start with, no charges. then they joined with world online, obvisly because they were loosing money. then they started charging £5.99 a month for unlimited internet time or (i think) nothing if you had 6pm-8am. we had the £5.99 option. it was very good and we didn't mind paying this small amount when we used the internet all ... ...charging £15.00 for unlimited internet a month. i am not going to pay this when i can switch to bt internet for £5.99 a month 6pm-8am.i think that world online/screaming will loose alot of customers----money by doing this when there are always adverts with excelent deals on them which people WILL notice.
This service was brilliant but too good to last. ...
