Advantages: Large capacity, Very Fast transfer rate Disadvantages: Internal setup may pose trouble for some
I've been using the Barracuda 320GB Hard Drive for some months now, I bought it for the capacity, speed and new features aswell as many past experiences with seagate drives that have always been good, they may not come top in benchmark tests but there usually in the top five and are one of the most quiet.
As with most drives, after formatting you lose some space, the 320GB ended up being about 298GB, but no complaints here 298 gigs is more space than I'll ever use. The "ES" models are the ones to buy if you want reliability there designed for 24/7 operation mainly used in businesses, the BarracudaES monitors temperatures and shuffles I/O requests to allow the drive to cool if it gets too hot.
Internal is cheaper than external and you save desktop space, plus some external drives require a separate power supply so you also save ...
Advantages: fast, quiet, five years warranty Disadvantages: hot
The BarracudaES line is the higher-end (aka server line) series from Seagate, one of the big player in the storage business. It's designed for 24/7 operation and comes with five years warranty.
This one is the SATA-II type which allows a maximum 3Gbps transfer rate. Some old motherboards can't accept SATA-II type of harddisk, so Seagate puts a jumper to "downgrade" the BarracudaES to SATA-I specification (1.5 Mbps transfer rate). It has 16MB cache for maximum speed and reliability. Most hard disks come with 4-8MB of cache size.
This one is very fast, reliable and impressive. I've been using it for almost 3 years, 6-12 hours a day and no single data corruption to date. It's relatively quiet but can be pretty hot when using continuously. Yes, I said hot, not warm. Sensor reading from the software "Everest" shows that ...
Advantages: Fast, Value for Money, Quiet, 5yr warranty Disadvantages: none that i know
to transfer data between pc's without using a network, or for backup storage on many pc's. Also with external hard drives from seagate you only get a 1yr warranty, instead of 5yrs for internal drives like this one.
The formatted usable size is 298gb, not 320gb, it is very quiet I do not notice it at all. It is lightning fast thanks to its 16mb cache which helps make windows and programs load up quicker.
The downside with the low price I paid was that as it was OEM (original equipment manufacturer) hard drive, this means that it is for computer manufactures and the hard drive is the only item incuded, so there is no instruction manual, or the sata cable to connect your hard drive to the motherboard. I had to buy the cable seperatly, but this was only a couple of quid. However nnon OEM drives come with the cable included.
Although no ...
