Manufacturer's product description
Drive crashes are unpredictable and once it happens, your mission-critical data is lost - unless you back it up regularly. Seagate prepares you for data disaster with their Scorpion 96 internal autoloader. It offers high performance, low cost, multi-gigabyte protection for high-end servers and workstations. Scorpion 96 can back up to 48 GB of uncompressed data and 96 GB of compressed data with its four slot magazine. Its single drive features a 2200 KB per second transfer rate, a high-performance 2 MB buffer, and a 40 second seek time. It fits into a 5.25-inch full height drive bay. Scorpion 96 uses the Helical Scan recording method on 90 meter tapes. Helical Scan heads record data at an angle, rather than in a straight line which takes advantage the entire width of the tape.
Advantages: Fast, Value for Money, Quiet, 5yr warranty Disadvantages: none that i know
...to transfer data between pc's without using a network, or for backup storage on many pc's. Also with external hard drives from seagate you only get a 1yr warranty, instead of 5yrs for internal drives like this one.
The formatted usable size is 298gb, not 320gb, it is very quiet I do not notice it at all. It is lightning fast thanks to its 16mb cache which helps make windows and programs load up quicker.
The downside with the low price I paid was that as it was OEM (original equipment manufacturer) hard drive, this means that it is for computer manufactures and the hard drive is the only item incuded, so there is no instruction manual, or the sata cable to connect your hard drive to the motherboard. I had to buy the cable seperatly, but this was only a couple of quid. However nnon OEM drives come with the cable included.
Although...

Advantages: Huge capacity, reasonably fast, 5 year warranty Disadvantages: Not the fastest
...battery life - if you're spinning it faster, the battery life will suffer, badly.
After a quick search I came across the Seagate. The capacity is huge compared to most laptop drives at 160Gb. This is as a result of a fairly new technology called perpendicular recording which allows the drive to write data vertically in the disk magnetic layer as opposed to across it. This gives the possibility for much more storage space than traditional non perpendicular drives. The price was also ridiculously cheap (that or I've not being paying attention to 2.5inch drive prices recently). If I'm honest, I was also unaware that perpendicular recording had made it to laptops so there was an element of the 'new and cool technology' in the buying equation.
The drive spins at 5600RPM which ought to make it quicker but it should also be quicker still because...

Advantages: Quick Tranfer Rate, High Capacity, Low Price Disadvantages: Reasonably Big, Not USB Powered
...I bought this external hard drive a week ago from Maplin for £90. I bought this because of its 300GB size, and because it was an extremely good price for the size.
Seagate have a very good reputation for a good quality product for a reasonably good price. It came very quickly, and I saw that it came with BounceBack for backing up files. I installed it and connected the hard drive to my PC. The Seagate was found straight away, and it opened up in My Computer. I closed the window, and I opened up the BounceBack.
The first time you run it, it asks you to select if you want to backup 'My Documents' and your program files, or just 'My Documents'. After this is done, it does a pre-backup to find out how big the backup will be. Once this is done, it starts backing up what you selected. You can make the window smaller and use you...

This product is a bit of a double edged sword. The down side is that my second one of these has just failed after returning my orgional to the supplier after a Harddrive failure, the same has just happened. the Drive is quite bulky, however this does not more
