Don’t you just hate it when something goes wrong with the car and you haven’t got the right bit to sort it, or even attempt to sort it? Such is life that this happens to me all the time or at least it used too. I still get caught out occasionally with the big expensive bits but in general for screws and those funny-headed gizmos that keep some secret part of the engine running I’ve now got them sussed.
About 18 months ago my old Rover had a problem with the distributor, and it turned out that it was a part called the igniter, which was held onto the distributor by 4 funny-headed screws. Not wanting to risk faffing about with an ordinary screwdriver and ending up with a totally botched head to the screws I shifted myself across to good old Maplin’s and coughed up my £9.99 (You can get it cheaper on the net if you exclude P+P)
So what did I cough up for well basically it is a 100-piece set of screwdriver bits? Since the single bit I wanted was costing £4.99 I decided that the extra £4 investment might prove thrifty in the long run and I was most certainly prove correct. In the 100-piece set is virtually any piece you are liable to need for opening or closing things, which are secured with ALL those special screws.
I’ve highlighted ALL since as of yet and that’s 18 months of fixing and opening of which I am quite partial I have yet to come across a screw for which I am unable to find a bit. I know that may seem like a bold statement since especially you guys out there will know there are some very weird looking screw heads to be found.
The bits are made of the highest quality and I have used many of them on some very awkward and hard to get too screws, with neither the screw nor the bit coming to grief, more so the screw has always been removed and once the repair complete refitted an tightened. All of the bits are compatible with the now common multi-bit screwdrivers, with quarter inch hexagonal fittings. Extender bits are supplied as is a resizing bit to fit different sized screwdrivers. Each piece of the kit has its own moulded position in the red case, which houses all the pieces. The plastic hinged case has a thin piece of foam supplied which acts as a spacer and protection between each set of bits when the box is closed.
All those funny screws on irons, PDA’s and calculators, especially all those weird and wonderful ones found in the engine of your pride and joy, all easily removed and replaced by one relatively cheap kit. I am very impressed by this great addition to my toolbox and I have used it on numerous occasions where I might otherwise have been caught out. It might not get the use other screwdrivers in my kit get but it is there when I need it and it has saved me a fair bit of cash, which was destined to end up in the garage owner’s pocket.
P.S. I got the Rover fixed only to have to scrap it 3 months later, I miss her so much.
