"How well do you sleep?"

According to the Sleep Council, mattresses should ideally be replaced every ten years or so. Having suffered increasing back pain and noticing a gradual deterioration in the quality of our sleep we decided it must be time to replace our nine year old Slumberland, the top surface of which had compacted so much that we had become very aware of exactly how many springs it contained.

A quick look around the net and various catalogues revealed that a decent mattress was going to cost around £300, so we set off to look at the real thing. It’s impossible to buy a mattress by mail order, how will you tell if it suits you or not?

Sleepmasters was our first port of call and, after lying down in various positions on various mattresses we decided on one with a nice thick layer of upholstery on both sides, and posturetech springs, the Sealy Posturepaedic Ultra Luxe, “designed in conjunction with the UK’s leading orthopaedic surgeons”, so it must be good; at £320 delivered it had better be. We did look in one other shop but the range wasn’t as good and to be fair we’d already subconsciously decided.

This mattress is available in different firmness ratings and we went for a medium one as we felt our previous one had been too hard. Having said that it is very supportive under the layers of sumptuous upholstery. At a massive 28cm (11”) thick plus a bit extra for the upholstery, it is incredibly soft and amazingly comfortable, so much so that I spent a lot of time lying on it reading books instead of sitting downstairs watching TV. There are seven layers of filling including a layer of silk and if it felt good in the shop, it was nothing compared to sleeping on it. I have to say that it is easily the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on and that after a week on this mattress the aches and pains in my back, neck, and shoulders were gone. It also features a special steel perimeter rod, to which the outer springs are clipped making the edge of the mattress as supportive as the centre and allowing you to sleep right up to the edge without any problems, useful for wriggly folk and it effectively increasing the useable surface area of the bed. We didn’t need a bed base as we have our own slatted frame and were told that this mattress is designed to be used on this type of base as well as on a sprung divan so no worries there. As a traditional double sided mattress it has to be turned regularly but has two handles either side and is not too heavy despite its bulk, so turning it is not too strenuous.

The only problem is in finding fitted sheets deep enough to reach the 11” to the bottom, that and the fact that it is now incredibly difficult to get out of bed in the mornings. Standard sheets are apparently based on an 8” thick mattress and tend to slide up and off so the search for deep sheets is on.

Thinking about the cost, during a ten year period and averaging eight hours a night, 29220 hours will be spent in bed (add a few to that for me, if I'm lucky), which works out at less than 9p a night (even cheaper for me!). Look at it like that and it’s an incredible bargain as well!

By Sealy’s own admission they “spend more time and money on product development than any other bed manufacturer and make the worlds best selling mattresses”. Having slept on this one for a while now I can see why. You shouldn’t have any trouble finding one either as they are widely available in stores or online.

To anyone with an old mattress, backache or trouble sleeping I’d say treat yourself you deserve it!

I have begun to get a lot of aches in my shoulders, lower back and joints recently. We are doing up our front bedroom this year and plan to get a new bed if we can afford it so I shall probably be arguing for one of these, so thanks for giving me some good points to argue! Sharron xxx
