More coffee, Sir? Being a Secretary.

Advantages: Safe office job, no 'customers', just clients
Disadvantages: Dealing with office politics, making coffees!

I've been a secretary for just over a year now. Let me tell you about my experience.

I didn't go to uni. There was primary school, high school, sixth form (which I only did because my parents expected it of me) and that was me done. I didn't enjoy studying, and I hated exams. I actually got pretty great GCSEs and came out of sixth form with 3 A Levels and 2 AS Levels, between B and D grade, so fairly good. My real dream was photography ...
...I'd accomplish those dreams, rather than gaining it the typical way by going to university. I had plans to travel as well. I decided that I needed a full time job to save my money for a year until I could pursue these goals.

I applied for plenty of jobs, mostly in shops and offices near where I lived. I was offered a couple of interviews, and then landed myself a job working as a Trainee Secretary for a Surveyors. £11k a year. For a ... more

Take a letter and order some chocs for my mistress

Advantages: Varied. Great if you have a great boss.
Disadvantages: Low Pay. Little Credit. Always second best.

...of commitment. I've done secretarial work three times for three very different employers. Here's my lowdown on what the job requires, what it involves, and why I got out of it some time ago. The Job Secretarial work typically involves lots of word processing. You'll be producing reports, letters, faxes, memos, e-mails, research papers and more on a daily basis. Other computer based office software will also play a big part in your routine. Chances ...
...however, you will find your secretarial role encompassing those of PA, office junior, tea lady and even cleaner. And then there's all those little extras all bosses will expect from you, such as shopping for gifts for the wife/husband, arranging your boss's holiday/restaurant bookings/theatre tickets/car servicing etc. etc. etc. Skills Required Obviously, competency on all sorts of office software will need to be demonstrated at interview. A good agency.

Advantages: good for students
Disadvantages: I've never had any problems with them/

Manpower are the only agency I've worked for. As a student, it's important for me to find work when I've got holidays, and Manpower have been absolutely excellent in finding it for me. I do clerical/secretarial work, and have found the pay to be above average, and the working conditions good. They always pay wages on time too - which is of course very important. The office I worked for was good in terms of helping me find work and indeed keeping me informed when I was working in a place. Sometimes jobs were given to me at short notice - but when you're just sat at home otherwise, this is not a problem. ...

Sense and Secretaries.

Advantages: Good pay, sometimes challenging environment, calls for excellent communication skills
Disadvantages: Office based job dealing with paperwork.

MY EXPERIENCE As a way of gaining experience of secretarial work, or just as a means of finding employment whilst looking for something else, temping is a well known route. It is also one of the main sources of recruitment in hospitals and the medical sector. Being a medical secretary through a temping agency is a different from an ordinary 'temping' job. Having worked in the public sector, in the mid 1990's I decided on a change and after my placement ended, I registered with a medical secretarial agency. My first longerm placement turned out to be with a well known central London hospital, my second with cancer specialist hospital. At your initial agency interview, they will be interested in any special skills you may have, such as audio, shorthand etc, as well as the standard office skills. You will probably be ...

Review of Medical Secretary

I went to the medical centre........

Advantages: The good days
Disadvantages: The bad days

Us Medical Secretaries get a rough deal. Not only do we have to deal with abusive patients but also grumpy doctors. Both are hard to deal with, but having had special training in situations like these, I am able to deal with both. Patients need honesty and doctors need coffee!! Ok so I have been working in the medical sector for 5 years now (started when I was 17), and up until recently I have loved every minute. I worked in Reception of my local NHS governed medical centre (and still occasionally do) all the hour's god sends and I have came across all sorts of people. It wasn't until my practice manager suggested a training course up at the college for the position of medical secretary that I thought this would actually be a career! The surgery sent me to college for 1 year to do a medical secretaries course. They paid ...
