"Glad Theres no Faeries at the Bottom of My Garden"

"Seduced by Moonlight" is the third book in the Merry Gentry series. Laurell K Hamilton is probably better known as the author of the Anita Blake, vampire Hunter / Slayer style novels. She is also going to become better known as a soft porn writer too if she is not careful.

For those not familiar with the Merry Gentry Saga and the land of faerie she inhabits, a little background. Three years ago Merry (or Princess Meredith NicEssus as she is also known) fled her Aunt's court as to many of the other fey were trying to kill her. Now for everyone else court battles do not pose a problem, Merry however, is part mortal. At the start of the first book “Kiss of Shadows” she is working for a detective agency in LA. However her aunt has discovered her hiding place. She is then dragged back and made heir to the throne of the unseelie court. In Hamilton’s world, the Seelie court is light and the unseelie is dark, Merry descends from both fractions of the faerie world. Keeping up at the back there?

The land of Faerie is dying, their magic is fading, there are few children born and Merry will only become heir if she becomes pregnant before her cousin Cel can discover the joys of fatherhood. Of course Merry cannot achieve this on her own, so the Queen gives her a number of her bodyguards to help her with her task. Who ever gets Merry Pregnant will become King.

Each book near enough picks up straight from the last one and at the beginning of "Seduced by Moonlight" Merry magically dreams into her procession an ancient challis, thought lost for centuries. Seemingly more important is the fact that Merry is still without child. The answer to this problem is more sex, which starts on page 8 and doesn’t come up for air until roughly 200 pages later. This sounds slightly worse than it is, in between the vast amount of tinglings in Merry's loins, she does manage to make negotiations with her allies and restore members of her menagerie to their former glory. Since Merry’s return to court the Fey magic is slowing being restored. The appearance of the Chalice has also speeded up the regaining of Fey magic. (This is one of the more interesting subplots that have run throughout the books and looks more to become more integral to the story as time goes on.)

Too be honest it all get a bit silly, which is a shame because the first two books were awesome, plots and evil baddies to fight and everything. Merry started off as a strong sassy heroine, she has now withered into a sex pawn in a game of court politics. Her gaggle of sword welding uber-hunks seems to swell on every page(literally), and very little happens until the end of the book when they are return back to the unseelie court, which is as brilliant as the first two novels but it is also the end. Which isn’t fair. Its as if laurel suddenly though “oh my, Something it actually happening to my characters besides orgasms and sulks, I better stop before anything exciting happens. Lots of foreplay, but no fireworks.

Now this all sounds like I hated Seduced by Moonlight, when I didn’t. The Queen, Andais is given much more depth than before and I feel she is one of my favourite characters in the series, despite being a scary masochist. It may not have as much substance as its predecessors but is a fun sexy read nonetheless. The entire book is played out over the course of only two days so it is little surprise that so little happens. The next book, A Stroke of Midnight, is due out in April and I am treating this one as a light filling, a quick rollercoaster diversion, before rushing head long into the real life, into the storyline of the next book.

I would implore any body to read the first two (Kiss of Shadows and A Caress of Twilight ). Unfortunately this means you may have to read this one if you want have further adventures with Merry and her Men, but while you are doing so you can cross your finger and hope that the next one fulfils the promise of the first.

I have only given this two stars as I think book as a stand alone read would be pretty poor, however I have recommeded this product to Buyers as I recommened the series to would-be readers. And if you want to read the seies then you have to go out and buy this one too. Okay, hope that makes sense to you all!

Due to mature content, I'd also recommend for adults only.
