Scandal Takes a Holiday

Advantages: Humour - Falco's family life (+) excellently researched by Davis (+) gripping story
Disadvantages: Little physical and 'chases' description (-) a little too family life-related at times

Here is another book review using my 'revised' formatting. Hope you enjoy, comments and guestbook comments highly welcome as always! :-D THE AUTHOR Lindsey Davis was born in 1949 in Birmingham, England. She is famous for her writings that majorly revolve around history and murder mysteries, with some undertones of romance and 'passion crime'. The majority - if not all - of Davis' work is set in a historial period, for example, Scandal Takes a Holiday is set in ancient day Rome. Her novels have won several awards, including New Bestseller and Historial Novel Priza and saw her become President of the organisation Classical Association in 1997. A nineteenth book in her current series was recently published at the beginning of February 2009; it is entitled "Alexandria". Davis studied English Literature at Oxford ...

Review of Scandal Takes a Holiday - Lindsey Davis

Carry On Falco

Advantages: Interesting idea and setting
Disadvantages: The "Carry On" humour

Although not a great fan of historical crime fiction, I did really enjoy Ellis Peter's Cadfael stories, and when I found out that there was a series of books by another author set in Ancient Rome, I thought that they would be worth a try. This book is the first in the series, which introduces us to "private informer" Didius Falco, who is the Ancient Roman equivalent of a modern day private investigator. Since this book was published in 1989, at least sixteen more books have followed and there is something of a cult following for Lindsey Davis' books. Unfortunately, I struggled to appreciate the admiration others have for these books. The story It is AD 70 and Marcus Didius Falco bumps into a beautiful young girl, sixteen year old Sosia Camillina. She is fleeing from two thugs who seem intent on doing her a good deal of damage. As ...

Review of The Silver Pigs - Lindsey Davis

Not Davis' best

Advantages: A great read for those who like novels set in a 'classical' era
Disadvantages: Not the best Falco book, but because its the first one, it IS advisable (though by no means essential) to read it

Silver Pigs IS a good book, but I did find parts of it vaguely dull (Falco's 'stint' working closely with silver) and so it was not quite as gripping as those further on in the series, but it was her first one in the series. This was not the Davis' book that I started off with - I actually began with Venus in Copper (an aunt bought it for me) and having enjoyed that one so much; back-tracked to the others. I don't think i missed all that much doing this; perhaps some of the subtleties of his relationship with Helena were lost; but not anything earthshattering. Davis' characters are fantastic, and I love her little introductions to them all as the 'dramatis personae'. A slightly below par book from an above average series. ...
