Advantages: A compelling story Disadvantages: An awkward style
the words on the page, follow the story, for that is what a novel does, you need to follow the story to complete the tale that forms in your head and it is an awkward device to use, being only a burden, nothing positive. (See what I mean?)
So there are disadvantages to this book – it can be hard to follow, because of the lack of characters’ names and the style of the writing. There are many unpleasant images described too – violence, death, rape, etc. I would certainly be reluctant to read another of JoseSaramago’s novels, unless the subject matter was especially good.
On the positive side, the story is well worth reading. It is thought provoking, inventive and believable. The last third of the novel was riveting and deserved to be read in one sitting. There are also beautiful images amongst the evil, the filth ...

known, and of course not only can she smell those toilets, but she can see them too. I know I wouldn?t want to be her, however ?lucky? she is?

JoséSaramago takes an interesting concept, plays it out in front of the reader with steely and formidable logic. He simultaneously shocks us into realising just how fragile ?civilisation? really is and just keeps us dangling on a thin twist of hope with the verbal beauty that bobs to the surface at the most eccentric of moments. The structure and scope of this novel are enormous, momentous, and expansive: but as with all the very best writing it is the tiny moments that make it great and Saramago has created some characters that we know could just have been us?

We like the Doctor's wife 'see' the whole horror of the
situation. Maybe the book is a warning not to let society
break down but people periodically write such books and
they don't normally seem to work. Perhaps though it is
right to still try. ...
