(+) Plenty of storage space, for media. Good Games, Great for partys, with singstar. Very Reliable. (-) Sometimes the optical drive, breaks; but not very likely, my 60gb still working after 2 1/2 years.
Advantages: Lead the way, TV Tuner, Classic Games, 'Real' Colour Screen Disadvantages: Heavy, Lust for Batteries, Quite Fragile, Expensive at the time
I mean really... Sega beat Nintendo to it years ago! I'll be the first to admit that the Gameboy advance has MUCH better graphics than Sega's Game Gear, but the graphics aren't THAT much better considering all the years that have gone by.

The Game Gear came out in the early 90's and was launched as the only rival to the original Gameboy. The main difference was the fact that it had a full colour screen... not quite as good as the monitor your looking at now (I hope anyway), but good for the time & good enough to watch TV on.
That was one of the great things about the Game Gear... it could be used for more than just a games machine. The Game Gear generally cost around the £100 mark & you could buy a TV tuner for £40, plug it in to the top & hey presto! You’ve got a pretty good portable TV.
The quality of games was also very good at the time, when it first came out there wasn't much difference between the Game Gears games & the latest consoles which were the Sega Master system through to the Mega Drive era.
Classic games such as NBA Jam (I've still to this day never found such a playable basketball game), Super Monaco GP, Sonic, Echo The Dolphin... the list goes on.
One of the main flaws with the Game Gear was the battery life... it was pants, Six batteries were needed to power this baby on the move (an mains adapter was available for when your staying put). Six batteries aren't cheap & no you couldn't use rechargeable batteries... the big question is how long those batteries lasted... 3 hours tops is the sad truth. The Gameboy could last for a day on fewer batteries.
The second problem was the LCD screen... not only was it a swine to view in bright conditions, but it was also very fragile, I went through 2 Game Gears were the LCD would crack & that was it, no chance of repair.
It wasn’t the smallest handheld either, still quite ergonomic though… so it fitted into your hands well. The buttons were also well placed & you got 4 instead of 2 on the Gameboy. It weighed a ton when it was filled with batteries, which took the whole ‘portable’ side out of it a bit.
The Game Gear certainly lead the way in the handheld market in it's time, but just wasn't really 'cost effective' for the target audience & worst of all it didn't have Tetris.
Game Gears can be bought for second hand these days (try e-bay or qxl) & to tell you the truth aren't really worth buying anymore... download an emulator & play the classic games instead.
Please Note: The overall rating is for the Game Gear's Past & it would only recieve a 'poor' rating as a consumers choice to purchase.
...the 16-bit systems notobly the Sega Mega Drive and Super NES, there was a secret console war going on, it was on a much smaller scale (literally!), yet was fought with as much heart as the big boys. This was the hand held war, and for the most part, was between the Nintendo Gameboy, and the Sega Gamegear, in the end the Gameboy won, but not without a few scratches and a dented ego....
The Sega system was released in 1991, as Sega hurreidly rushed ... ...or less based on the Sega Master System specs with only a few improvements. The machine sported a colour back-lit LCD screen (in my opinion still better then the Gameby colour) and was fairly small and portable. At the height of its popularity it boasted a fantatic catalogue of games, most notobly the sonic series, and the Mortal Kombat games. By the time it was terminated in 1997 it had a library of wel over 300 games but there were several factors ...

...better graphics and if only Sega had continued to improve and upgrade such as the Nintendo game boy they could quite easily have be top of the market with one of the best hand healed consoles around. There are still a few around (but not many that still work properly) and there are only a small amounts of games for it that you can still bye. This may have been one of the best but now the game boy towers over it as it disappear into the shadow. ...

Advantages: good in its time Disadvantages: quite big
The Sega Gamegear came out a long time ago and it could actully produce colour graphics and it took cartridge games just like the game boy did. It was quite big in size and like any other console took it consumed batteries very quickly. It was quite expensive in its time as there were no other consoles available at that time that were like it. There was a wide range of games available for it and you can get hold of the Sega Game Gear for about 10 ...

Advantages: Looks really stylish, easy to hold. Disadvantages: Games are a little harder to get hold of now.
I bought a sega game gear 4 years ago now and I still think that it is the best portable console out although the games are not as readily available. It's very light and not at all uncomfortable to hold and the games are all in colour. I've also got an adapter that can change it into a t.v which I use in the bedroom. Although it's larger than the gameboy it still looks much more stylish even today. There is a huge variety of games for the game gear ...

Overall, the Game Gear has so many capabilities but it is let down by its awful battery life. I would only recommend to Sega fans because you won't be pleased with this. ...

Historically, Nintendo was in competition with Sega - a battle characterised by Super Mario vs Sonic the Hedgehog. In 1985 Nintendo launched the NES - a fantastic gamingconsole which we all remember for Super Mario and Duck Hunt (that came along with the Zapper). Sega instigated the beginning of the rivalry by launching the Master System. 3 years later, Nintendo launched the Gameboy, immediately being counterattacked by Sega's Gamegear.
Finally Sega took the initiative and launched the Mega Drive to which Nintendo replied with the superior Super Nintendo. The battle then slowed - Sega launched the 32 bit Saturn, to which Nintendo again ...

Advantages: Crisp gameplay on the move, portable MP3 player Disadvantages: None of note
Up until now handheld gaming devices have been a rather hit and miss affair, yes there have been occasional gems like Nintendo's Gameboy but more often than not the results are more likely to follow the Nokia N-Gage and the SegaGameGear into the abyss of poorly thought out and poorly marketed gadgets we'd rather not have. Now Sony have decided that holding the monopoly on the household gaming market is not enough and have launched a portable gaming system with the hope of taking a large chunk of that market as well, and while the Nintendo's Gameboy is a competent little system the Sony PSP (Playstation Portable) offers so much more to the person who needs to be entertained on the move.

*This is a review of Baku Baku Animal for the Saturn - unfortunately Ciao have screwed up and stuck this in the wrong category!*
So the Princess wants yet another pet, but the King's not having it - she's already got too many. The Minister however, has an idea, that is to hold a competition as a means of selecting a zookeeper. Hence Master Piggy sends Polly, his pupil, to participate. Along the way she takes on the likes of Gallopy, Silver Angela, and Gon.
Baku Baku Animal is a dropping block column puzzle game which, released to the arcades in 1995, saw conversions to both the Sega Saturn and SegaGameGear around a year after. And with Tectoy, the South American regions would see a version (similar, if not same as that for the GameGear) for the Sega Master System in 1998. Not bad!
Aside from the obvious aesthetic differences ...
