You just can`t beat the old Sega Megadrive, I know it`s not state of the art in gaming and graphics, but it`s proved a firm favourite of my 7yr old son and all his mates. My son can demolish anything, shove him in an empty room and he`ll still find something to break. The Megadrive however seems to be indestructable. All the parts are just more solidly built than all other gaming platforms. Take the playstation for example, we gave in and bought him a ps1, now I have to watch it every second it`s out because my toddler has made it her mission to try and snap the flip up lid off. If I hadn`t been watching her it would`ve been history by now.
Our Megadrive has been thrown across the bedroom so many times during temper tantrums, and no, not by me, but it has still never had one little chip, crack or fault. The games are much the same too, built from thick solid plastic, looking much like a house brick, but also with the durability of one. I`ve lost count of the amount of playstation games that I`ve found scratched, cracked and even snapped into several pieces, you just can`t do that with a megadrive game, well not without the aid of a hammer anyway. If it wasn`t for the fact that I refuse to pay the ridiculous prices for new playstation games, and only buy second hand at rock bottom prices, then the playstation would`ve been imprisoned to the top shelf for that reason alone.
Who can say they did not get addicted to the little blue hedgehog and his furry tailed friend. Sonic has got to be the most memorable game ever invented. Granted, I did get rather fed up up of the music after a week of constant play by my hubby and son, but that`s soon rectified by turning the sound down and hiding the remote. I did the same on the playstation, but I didn`t know you could turn it up by the game controller, it`s saying something when a 7yr old knows more than you do. Streets of rage and roadrash are 2 others that are favourites in our house, and in the words of my son "It`s cool because I`m just too good", which is proof of how easy the games are to master. I just hate having to read a 20 page manual before I can play game.
I`ve got to say also that the controllers are much easier to handle by children, and even me for that matter, than the bulky alien shaped controllers of the ps1. You also can`t get confused by which button does what, as an arrow is an arrow no matter which way it`s facing, unlike the stupid shape idea on the ps1 controllers.
The graphics aren`t memorable, but I think they are more than adequate for a child`s first venture into the gaming world. The blood and gore is also a lot less realistic, which is a good thing for a 7yr old in my opinion.
The price is also a top factor in why this is my favourite console. You can expect to pay around £30 for a Sega Megadrive, much less if you shop around. I paid about £20 for mine at a car boot sale, and that included a load of games as well. You might have to shop around a bit to find extra games, but you`ll still find plenty second hand in charity shops, local papers, and car boot sales, I`ve also seen quite a few on auction sites such as ebay. Most of mine are from charity shops, and I`ve never paid more than £1.50 for a game, some I`ve even got for as little as 50p. They`re much more reliable than cd based games also as it`s very rare that one locks up as you`re playing, and we all know how annoying that can be.
Although the playstation does get played quite bit in our house, the Megadrive gets played more often, and the best bit about it, because of it`s durability it can stay in my son`s bedroom so I can get some peace and quiet when he decides to invite half the street in.
Advantages: Pretty console, good games Disadvantages: Highly priced games, couldn't handle 3D, very few games with save feature
...systems weren't as popular pre-playstation, Sega didn't face the prospect of a tough battle with other companies to constantly upgrade their technology, or at least not to the extent that it is at now - consoles now upgraded every 4-5 years. Poeple remained satisfied with games on offer and rivals Nintendo didn't release their successor until 1996. Perhaps more significant though, was the faliure of the Mega-CD. Sega's first disc based machine was ... ...building Sega's reputation. In 1990, Sega released their first 'Sonic the Hedgehog' game. This not only showcased the true power of the machine but also gave them a mascot whom they have been assosiated with ever since. Classic Sega-developed games 'Streets of Rage' (still today among my favourite two-player titles) and 'Golden Axe' followed as well as spawning their own sequels. Two of my all-time favourite games, endearing RPG 'Wonderboy In Monsterworld' ...

Choosing Sega over the competitors was easy - this was their console golden age (days long gone unfortunately) - even a starry-eyed Sonic lover like myself could see, however, that the end was nigh - just by looking at some of those SNES games. And the following Saturn was a disappointment to most. But I'm here to discuss the Megadrive. So here goes.

...dissuade anyone into buying a Sega Megadrive, so I suppose by default it shouldn't be written. But I enjoy reminiscing about my youth, hopefully you will too if you are of a similar upbringing, this is my chance for a bit of fun. Come with me now on a trip down memory lane... The fast-paced adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog appealed to our animal fun senses more than the more in-depth game with the plumber on the other console, and the Megadrive was clearly the superior console as it was black, the colour of Batman. And who was ever cooler than the B-man? In terms of the games, and being unbiased for a moment, the Megadrive had a great many racing and beat-em-up games, such as the Mortal ...

Advantages: Pick up & play, VERY cheap, great games, simple & relaxing Disadvantages: Anyone that used to have a SNES will start whinging that it was better.
Ah the Mega Drive - this takes me back!!! Mine is still in great working order and gets pulled out of storage once in a while to bash four shades of blue out of Dr. Robotnik with Sonic the Hedgehog!! The Mega Drive is a 16-bit console straight out of gaming dreams - it was a revolutionary console when it came out and managed to split the world in a Mega Drive Vs. SNES argument that still occurs today whenever you mention retro gaming. Just to put ... ...leagues in front. It uses a crescent shaped joypad with three action buttons and a D-Pad and was actually the very first incarnation of the ergonomic joypad design. You might want to get a few of these spare though as the Mega Drive ones didn't always last too long. Pay particular care using this system and where possible leave your joypads connected!! This is because the Mega Drive has the pins on the console itself instead of in the controller ...

Advantages: Excellent gameplay, cheap, durable, great for kids Disadvantages: do you want to use it when its becoming colectable?
The Sega Mega-Drive is a superb console machine of the past. Utitlising all Sega's knowledge of the arcade market, the games were invariably fast, furious and addictive.
Indeed, is there anyone in the UK, sorry, the WORLD who hasn't heard of Sonic the Hedgehog?

They were also extraordinarily popular during their time, so are childhood memories to a lot of people. This combination inevitably needs to a high demand and a low supply... these things do eventually break down after all. So purchase one in mint condition, store it in your attic under a protective cover, and bring it out in 5-10 years time. No bank will offer interest ...

Advantages: All the Sega Genisis/Megadrive games on your PC! Disadvantages: Watch out for the Japanese versions of the games
The Genisis Emulator (casually known as Gens) emulates any Genisis games there are, that is, if you want to play that many in the first place.
But what is the Genisis?
The Megadrive, origionally known as "The Genesis" first came out in 1995 (or there abouts), with Sonic the Hedghog, SEGA's answer to Ninty's (Nintendo's) Mario, and was a surprising sleeper hit (or so they say).
Following the success of the SEGA Genesis, they changed the name to the SEGAMegadrive, and set out for world domination for games.
However, Ninty beat them to it, only just like, by producing the Nintendo 64, or N64 for short in 1999 (or thereabouts).
However, the SEGAMegadrive lives on, and it leaves some of the best retro games like Sonic the Hedghog, Streets of Rage and Road Rash. All of which are encapsulated in the Gens emulator with other ...
Blaze have came out which I think is one of the greatest hand held consoles on the market today. I would recommend this to any sega fan, or in fact any games fan. This is a portable version of one of the greatest games consoles ever made. It is a hand held mega-drive (genesis in U.S.A) and an excellent console. It fits neatly in your hand and it has the same sort of design as the origional megadrive controller. On the right hand side you can find the three main buttons. On the other you can find the joystick. In the middle you can find the screen.
The game is playable from directly out of the box. When you turn it on you can find the menu which I found very easy to navigate through. The best selling point for this console is that it has 20 games preloaded. I found it incredible that I could play 20 games which I played 15 years ago in ...
Advantages: Great fun, brings back memories Disadvantages: Game can freeze when playing on the console
Sonic the Hedgehog is a very good platform video game created by Sega.
After being released in 23rd June 1991 In North America, and in Europe the next day, Sonic the hedgehog has become one of the, or probably the best video game mascot ever. Who knew such a small cartirdge would contain a video game which is soo much fun.
I've been playing this all my life and I yet haven't become bored of it!
This video game contains 6 levels, each level having 3 parts and at the final part of each level is Sonic's enemy through out the game, Dr.Robotnik, and he gets more difficult to beat everytime you see him.
This game contains the following levels:
1 - Green Hill Zone
2 - Marble Zone
3 - Spring Yard Zone
4 - Labyrinth Zone
5 - Star Light Zone
6 - Scrapbrain Zone
There is a Special stage at the end of the level, if you see a large ...
