I've had my Seiko Kinetic SQ50 watch for around six years now. That was around the time that they were released.
I bought it while I was on holiday and remember seeing it as just another nice looking watch. I hadn't seen adverts explaining what the 'Kinetic' in the name meant.
As I was trying it on, the shopkeeper explained to me what 'Kinetic' meant; Basically, the watch uses no batteries! It works on movement made as you wear it. As you go about your normal routine, a tiny mechanism inside the watch moves around creating 'Kinetic' energy which is stored by the watch and used to power it. Pretty impressive stuff from the Japanese!
I ended up buying the watch, which was an SQ50 model. It had a black face and a sapphire crystal face, which makes it scratch resistant. Markings on the face of the watch glow in the dark and the day and date are also displayed. Also on the face is a coloured indicator line, which I'll explain soon. The watch has two buttons on the side; one standard button to set the time/date and another push button.
This push button informs you of the amount of energy stored in the watch. The more the hand moves along the indicator, the more energy stored. Basically, on full charge, the watch can run, without further movement, for upto 3 months (this varies between models). Another visual indicator that energy is low, is that the second moves at two-second intervals. The watch also has a see-through back, through which you can see the mechanism and the actual pendulum at work!
I have been very happy with the watch, having experienced no problems at all with it. I am in the habit of giving the watch a rub over with the same cloth I use for my glasses every morning, which gives the appearance that the watch is still brand new, especially since the face is scratch resistant. People still ask me every second month whether I have a new watch!
I highly recommend Seiko watches generally. If anything were to happen to this watch, I'd probably buy another 'Kinetic' watch from the newer 'Auto Relay' or 'Premier' ranges. Great technology which still impresses me!

Good OP I have 3 seiko watches all Automatic I cant really improve or add to your op so I shant bother - the only thing I would reccoment is you have the watch serviced every 2 years (costs nearly £60.00 through HSamuels) but is well worth it! This coming Christmas my son is going to get his first Seiko kinetic. My work horse watch is the SQ50 i bought it for work as i need a reliable watch, and (touch wood) it has never let me down - even with heavy duty work i havent even got a scratch on it. Yup they are expensive but damn well worth every penny!

Sounds like a nice watch. Utulizing kinetic energy is an inventive method, but one that has proven very inefficient. I guess on such a small scale it is ideal. Anyway, nice review. ~John
