I have owned a Seiko Kinetic watch for about 5 years now. The model is a 5m42 OE30.
There are other models available like the 5M42-0h09 which has the same face but a complete blue plastic strap, quality of the watch is not as good though.
I believe that Seiko don't make this one any more and for the life of me I don't know why. I have however seen them in a few jewellers shops around the country and in Germany.
I bought it for £220 which was in a sale reduced from £400. Bargain.
The watch is silver in colour with a black face and white night illuminated numbers. There are the standard analogue Hour, Minute and second hands along with a clear and readable date display on the right hand side. Telling the time in any conditions is easy as the display is clear and well presented.
Also shown on the face is the battery meter, which is in the form of a yellow through red semi circle around the right hand side. I have never managed to work out how this is supposed to change as it is not in the manual and could never find any info on the internet about it. There is also a battery test button on the side which does work. When you press it the amount of charge is displayed relative to how much the second hand moves. Sounds complicated but its not. If your watch is fully charged it moves a full 30 seconds. The less charge you have the less it moves.
The obvious advantage of this watch is that there are no batteries. The watch is charged by an offset weight system that moves and charges the watch as you walk or exercise. If you wear the watch on a daily basis charge remains good. The same applies if you wear it only a couple of times a week. It should go flat after about 10-15 days which is quite a long time.
The watch is also water resistant to 10 BAR, which to you and me is about 100 meters. That's more than enough for a swim in the sea.
Around the face is also silver which is then surrounded by the main base of the watch in a sort of Titanium colour. Mounted on the side is the adjustment for the time and date.
The strap is rubber / plastic based and clad with a stainless steel metal cover through part of it. The clasp is a snap on metal type. The plastic part of the strap can be cut to length and then final adjustments made via some moveable pins next to the clasp.
The first thing that struck me about this watch was that it looked good whilst being a simple design. There are non of the over designed features that you get on a lot of today's watches.
The all round stainless steel and very good build quality of this watch makes it more than durable for most situations without having to worry about the watch. I use mine all the time and never take it off. Even all those heavy hours working on the car have never produced a scratch.
To date I have not had any problems with this cool watch. I guess the main thing I like about it is I will never be stuck on holiday again without time as the battery isn't going to die on me, something that I have had happen twice already on other watches.
This is a good all round high quality watch that will last you for years. If you can still get a hold of one I would recommend it, you'll get your moneys worth. It looks good on your arm and you get that feeling of expense but not extravagance.
