I have wanted a Seiko watch for a long time. The brand and designs just ooze quality and stature. It's no wonder I won't wear anything else these days.
It's important for my job that every second is accounted for, and with the Seiko kinetictitanium watch I have is perfect, drifting only a second over a period of months. Fantastic, from a watch with no battery!
The 'kinetic' mechanism I thought would be a gimmick, a back-up with no actual use. This is completely false. The watch does 'recharge' itself with the use of natural movement. The simple swing of your arms as you walk will be enough to keep it going for days. And for someone like myself who plays table football at work whenever we get a chance, it'll be recharged for days after only two minutes of vigorous wrist action!
There is a button on all kinetic watches which, with each second segment that it passes, will show you how much charge it is holding. I wait till the second hand reaches 12 and press the button. The second hand then flicks around the face stopping promptly at the six o clock mark. 30 second segments passed equals 30 hours charge. When the actual time reaches the time where the second hand rests it then continues to tick on as normal. A handy tool if you haven't had the watch on for a few days.
My version does not have auto-relay. This means that if I have had the watch off for a few days it will go to sleep when it runs out of charge. With the newer auto-relay watches when you pick up the watch to put it on it recognises movement and automatically spins to the correct time and continues as normal. A handy energy saving feature.
The one I wear is titanium. It looks fantastic as a dress watch and goes with any suit or shirt. I generally wear t-shirts and it doesn't look out of place with anything that I wear. The fact that it is titanium means it is extremely light as well as a good and fashionable colour.
The face on mine is a simple charcoal colour. The hours have small and simple glowing points on them, as do the hour and minute hands. The glow lasts a long time and it is easy to read the time if you have left a room and have wandered outside to a taxi or to the car, etc. No batteries required, only light.
The only issue I have had with it so far was when I got the clasp adjusted. my wrist is slightly smaller than the average and so I need at least two segments taken out of the strap. Somehow along the way since then I have lost the 'tubes' which are part of the pins which hold the segments in place. This means that every day I find myself, simply out of pure repetition, taking off the watch, running my finger along each edge of the strap feeling for pins sticking out, and then pushing them back in if I find any... which is normally one or two. All I really need to do is take it back to the shop I got it adjusted with the spare segments and they will re-fit the tubes and pins. The point being though, they shouldn't have come out in the first place with proper adjustment by the jewellers.
I recommend Seiko for their designs and their prices, as well as their features. if you see a style that you like and you can afford it, go for it. Get the kinetic auto-relay ones if you can, they are worth every penny.
