Advantages: Accessible and easy to read Disadvantages: Poetry put some people off!

I have only highlighted and small selection of the poems that are included, but I think they give you a flavour of what the rest are like. Gunn’s poetry was hip at the time in the same way that a Tarantino film is hip now. He manages to capture the feeling of the time and although like much of the beat literature it seems from a modern, more cynical perspective very naive but it is still worthwhile reading. In the end youthful angst whether it’s personified by ‘Rock and Roll’, Punk rock or modern dance/drug culture is still something many can relate too.
In conclusion the best way to sum up ThomGunn’s ‘A Sense of Movement’ is by using Gunn’s own words when describing Elvis in the poem ‘Elvis Presley’
