Noise cancelling earphones were something I had been after for a while. After reading the reviews on here, I decided on the Sennheiser CX 300, as it was either that or the Koss ones- and they sounded pretty crappy judging by the responses on here. I am quite into my music. When i say quite, I mean extremley. I am a music junkie.
On my daily travels, I really do need something that cancelles out background noise. I travel on a bus every morning, where the driver insists on turning up the radio nearly full blast- that wouldn't be so bad, except we don't get a signal where I live so all you can hear is that terrible 'no signal' radio fuzz. Also my life is generally a noisy one. Which is all good and well, but when I want to hear my music I really have to turn it up to dangerous levels.
Which is where these headphones come in. After reading the other reviews on here I feel a bit cheated. I bought my headphones from HMV, and I thought I was getting an okay deal. Well, I paid £39.99 (basically £40) and untill I read the price the others paid I was quite happy with
that. Wow. They got theirs £20 cheaper! Just shows maybe I should have looked around a bit more.. oh well.
When I first managed to tear (or chew) off the impossibly sealed blister pack these came in, a lot of stuff dropped out. A little baggie with rubber plugs in it, and the headphones themselves. The rubber plugs are for a better fit, and I'm extremley thankful of this option because its about time companies realised that 'one size fits all' is frankly, crap. I found that even though the medium ones were okay, the small ones were amazing. So even if you think you have the right size in, try each size. The difference when you put on the ones that really do fit is astonishing.
So, how easy were these to use? Very. I did get a bit scared at shoving something into what felt like my brain, but don't worry, just stick 'em in. When you put them in for the first time, it does feel a little weird, but you quickly get used to it. Your hearing is much like when you wear normal earplugs- a promising sign! Next step was turning on my player (A Zen V for those interested) . I have to say that wearing these earphones lets you listen to your music at a much lower volume- probably better for your ears after all! When there isn't much noise at all (like when i am studying in the library) I find I can listen to music at a level so low that before these headphones I wouldn't have been able to hear anything.
Aaahh.. but what about when it is noisy? Well, they do cancel out noise. Very nicely. I can now hear my music on the bus, in the town- anywhere! I do get a bit paranoid wearing these though- since you really can't hear anything but your music you start to think people are talking to you or something is going on that you can't hear! A minus point about these is that they don't respond well to heavy physical activity. by that I mean running, cycling ect. Don't worry though- I wasn't wearing these outside- I wore them in the gym! When I was running I found that they gradually slid out my ears- but a good old shove fixed that problem!
Onto the sound quality itself. Very, very good. The first time I used these I was amazed. the bass is so.. well.. bassy! Every note, every drumbeat and bassline, they are all clear and crisp. Things you probably wouldn't have been able to hear before are now clearly audible. Sound quality is by far one of the best I have heard for a long time. If you want an amazing gaming experience, try using these whilst plugged into a PSP! Every gunshot on Liberty City stories was lifelike and almost like surround sound!
These headphones ARE quite comfy. The rubber makes it hard for earwax (ew- I know!) to get stuck to them. It is also a new feeling being able to listen to these as I lie down. usually this was too painful an experience, but now it is like wearing no headphones at all! Obviously I would NOT reccomend wearing these running/jogging outside or whilst walking around on your own. That is how accidents happen, and when doing these things you need to be aware of what is going on around you.
Not to finish on a negative note, I can highly reccomend these! I really don't know what life would be like without them now- actually, probably very noisy and infuriating to listen to music! If like me you need noise cancelling headphones, I would strongly reccomend this brand AND model. I'm happy with my purchase, and even though I paid more than others, I still think they are worth every penny.
UPDATE: Okay, so that was then. Why the update I hear you ask? Well. The earphones were perfectly fine, doing their job as usual and with me sitting happily listening to my music without ambient noise. Untill on of the headphones broke. I wondered why I could hear every noise as clear as day- and my headphones wern't as clear and loud as they had been! That was the problem. One of the 'phones had gone completley mute, with sound only coming out the left side. Nothing from the right. obviously I have had a good long look at them, and everything is seemingly in order! After trying to put up with listening to music with one working earphone, I have given up.
Also, jamming the headphones in my ears has really started to take its toll on my ears. In my left ear, the inside is swollen and red where I have been putting the headphone in. Everytime I take out my music and plug myself in, the pain in my ear is terrible. I have decided that these headphones are now only fit for the bin. After a lot of searching, I have found noise cancelling headphones that do not go in your ear- they are like the old traditional ones that sit on top of your head, except these ones go round the back of your head- stopping you looking a like your stuck in the 90's. Just in case anyones interested, they are the Philips SHN5500Noise Cancelling Headphones. No doubt i will be reviewing them when they arrive. Untill then, thanks for reading!
