First off. Let me mention that I have nothing against the quality of the standard white iPod headphones that came pre-packaged with my new iPod Nano. However, I find them painful to wear for any length of time and they keep falling out of my ears, so I went looking for a suitable alternative.
Having had a very good pair of Sony’sFontopia earphones (with swappable rubber plugs much like the ones on these) a few years ago, I found the format and form factor comfortable and user-friendly , so I decided to plump for the CX300.
I ordered mine from Amazon for £16.99, opting for the eco-friendly packaging. As I have Amazon Prime, delivery was free and the package arrived with no hassle the next day. The packaging was novel (to say the least), being made up of successive layers of corrugated cardboard, cut to fit around the ear buds and cables, and held together by a promotional sleeve with Sennheiser’s product details on it, and a special eco-friendly badge made of recycled materials. All very nice, but I’d be a hypocrite for pushing a green agenda - I opted for this version of packaging because it was a few quid cheaper than the alternative.
The earphones come with three different sized buds, so you can choose which ones are most appropriate for your ear. They are a snug fit and do a very good job of blocking out outside noise. Almost too good, as a few near misses with quieter road traffic would attest. To give you some idea, I often use them when walking back from the Emirates Stadium to Angel Tube at the end of Upper Street in Islington – a high noise, high traffic area - and can usually listen to music at medium volume without any problem.
The downside is that this type of headphone amplifies you heartbeat, your footfall and you can audibly hear yourself swallowing. As such, it’s probably not suited for activities such as jogging, or any other rigorous exercise (they would probably fall out anyway), however it seems fine for light, normal walking, and after a while, I didn’t really notice this effect.
In terms of performance, they are a definite improvement on the bog standard iPod earphones. The bass is rich and clear, and the treble manages to be sharp without being painful or distorted. I have an eclectic taste in music, and it seems to perform just as well with Linkin Park, as it does with Stan Getz, the Gladiator soundtrack, or spoken word.
All in all, these are a great buy at the price, the only negative being that some people may not like the in-ear experience.
