I already had cheap head phones for chatting online but I wanted something more substantial for listening to music and in particularly to use whilst watching TV late at night. I wanted a pair of cans with decent quality but not necessarily something that only Fat Boy Slim would be impressed with. I'd used Sennheiser RS 130 headphones before and I remember the sound quality being excellent although I think they cost in the region of £60. For my new headphones I had been prepared to pay up to £30 so I was quite pleased when I discovered these EH150 headphones from Sennheiser for only £15.
Overall I was impressed with the sound quality which is more than satisfactory in this price range and compares well with the more expensive headphones I have used in the past. Like many headphones produced nowadays, these phones pack plenty of punch into the bass range of the spectrum, especially when listening to mp3's and the like. However, there is a slight lack of detail at the treble end. This is most noticeable to me whilst watching movies, but the lack of treble can usually be boosted with external sound equipment and whatever deficiencies there are certainly doesn't spoil my overall listening enjoyment. I think in terms of sound quality they should be fine for gaming and general listening to music as long as your not demanding perfection. Obviously the audio quality will not be up to the standard of higher end headphones
These are closed headphones, meaning that they should not emit too much leakage of sound to disturb those that may be sitting near you. They also to some extent effectively block out external noise from the nearby environment. This makes them ideal for using whilst travelling in trains, planes and automobiles (not whilst driving of course) or whilst hanging around noisy train stations and airports. On the whole the headphones are reasonably comfortable to wear due to an ultra-lightweight design of only 130g. Of course a lot depends on your head size and ears. I did find that after a period approaching two hours my ears did feel a bit sore. But having such a big head, I often have this problem with most headphones. Your ears might also get a bit hot and sweaty as these phones are designed to fit over the ears. Of course, you shouldn't really be wearing headphones for more longer than two hours in any one session.
I have read one or two reviews stating that there were problems with the cable connection with the phones faltering so as to cause interference or causing the sound to cut out. This is a common fault with cheaper headphones. So far I have not experienced this problem although I have only had to phones for just over three months. I would say though that the wires connecting the cable to the phones are a bit flimsy and do have a tendency to get tangled.
I would highly recommend these headphone in terms of value for money. If you're looking for something with a bit more range and less bass then you might have to look at the higher end of the market. For those who play video games all day long, you might need something a bit more comfortable.
