Two days ago, my Philips SHE 3650 in-ear earphones finally came to a "halt", after its loyalty with me for three good years and my good maintenance of it. In other words, it's spoilt. What happened was, I was listening to Ne-Yo's 'Because of you' and halfway through the song, the melody became very weird and the song got cut off. My first impression: the MP3 player's battery is weak. So, I plugged off the earphones, but, I could still hear the song, it's still playing! I plugged it back to the player and nothing happened, therefore, it's spoilt.
So, on that day itself, I went to those electronics shops to look for some good quality earphones. The shop has a good variety of high quality and budget headphones and earphones. Some will include Philips, Sony, Sennheiser, Apple and many more high quality ones. At home, I have a Philips SHS 390 headphone and the already "retired" SHE 3650. By reading this, you may think I'm a fan of Phillips, haha. Yeah, this time, I will pick a different one. Again, like the time when I purchased the Wii phone, I asked my friends for advice on how to go about for buying earphones. Some of them recommended Apple, while some, Sony. Apple's earphones are of good build and quality, but... a little bit costly. I might as well choose a unique earphone. So, in the electronics shop, there's one corner displaying Sennheiser products. I looked around and finally, had my eyes glued onto a Sennheiser IE6 over-the-ear earphone.
Interested in the product, I asked for some information about it from a salesperson. After a couple of minutes, I finally bought the IE6, which comes with a sleek carrying case, ear adapter set, cable clip, ear loops and a cleaning tool. I was eager to listen to the sound projection, as from what the salesperson had told me. Upon reaching home, I checked the earphones for any flaws. After that, I scanned through the earphone in great detail. From what I saw, I can say that it has quality build. What makes it different from other earphones is the strengthened cables, reinforced with a special type of material known as Kevlar , which makes the cable more strong and less vulnerable to breakage. Eager to listen to the sound projection, I then took out my MP3 player and immediately plugged in the earphone. Instantly, I was really satisfied with my decision. The sound projection was better than my SHE 3650. I could hear that the bass was stronger and a little bit distinct from the Philips model.
Ordinary earphones have frequency responses going as low as 20 Hz but for the IE6, it was 10 Hz, optimizing the sound projection and making the one listening to the song, happy. If you wanna further put the bass projection to the test, listening to songs with heavy basses like 'Blue Night' and '4 in the morning' or tracks from heavy metal bands and rock bands will help. I can say that the bass drums are defined and really have the boost. Vocals and cymbal sounds are realistic because Mid-ranges and high frequencies are well-reproduced. The IE6 also reduces 20dB of ambient noise .There are also three different sizes of ear adapters---small, medium and large. I felt that this was good as the different sizes can cater to our ears' sizes, in other words, we can find which ones are the best fit for our ears. However, this is also important because adapters which fit our ears, can better block out noise from the surroundings, acting as those noise-canceling devices found in better headphones. For your information, the ear adapters are made of silicon , which is more comfortable for the ears. For once, this pair of earphones made me forgot I was wearing them! The silicon is just too comfortable!
Yesterday, I wore the IE6, of course, plugged with music for 2 hours. During that period, I went to the gym for one hour, came back, bathed, then did some "XBOXing", I mean, playing the XBOX, with the earphone by my ears. Yes, after 2 hours, I was really happy, with the overall performance of the IE6. I also lent it to my cousin, who came to my house. He had his MP3 player with him and tried out my IE6. He was all smiles.
Final verdict
The IE6 is of good build and quality. The sound projection is much more different from those in the conventional earphones. The powerful neodymium magnets produced greater sound definition and enhanced bass. Different sizes of adapters improves blockage of surrounding noise. The IE6's good build enhances the attenuation of ambient noise. Kevlar-reinforced cables make the IE6 more strong, increasing its usage life. What attracts me most is its sleek and stylish design.
